Loving Memory of Senior Chief Fukamapiri VII 🕊️
Today, our hearts are heavy.
We have lost more than a traditional leader. We have lost a father to the community, a custodian of our traditions, a voice of wisdom, and a pillar whose presence gave strength and identity to his people.
Senior Chief Fukamapiri VII — born Witley Graham Phiri on 4 March 1940 — has passed away at the age of 86.
He was appointed to the chieftaincy on 11 April 1983 and formally installed on 25 February 1984. For more than four decades, he carried the responsibility of leadership and served as a living link between our past, our present and the generations yet to come.
A great tree has fallen.
But when a great tree falls, its roots remain beneath the soil, and the shade it once provided remains in the memories of those who stood beneath it.
His voice may have fallen silent, but his teachings will continue to speak.
His footsteps may no longer be seen, but the path he walked will remain.
His chair may now be empty, but the legacy he leaves behind will never be empty.
Today, an entire community mourns.
We mourn together.
We remember together.
We stand together.
And while no words can fully express the pain of losing such a significant figure, we choose not to remember only the moment of his passing. We choose to celebrate the life he lived, the people he served, the traditions he protected, and the legacy he leaves behind.
To the family he has left behind, may God give you strength in this difficult hour. May the memories of his life bring you comfort when the pain feels unbearable.
To his people, may we honour him by preserving the values, traditions and unity that he dedicated his life to.
