Neither is a Social Network. It's not immediately obvious why we should oppose facebook and do it so hypocritically (and conveniently). However, we should understand that all corporations lack morality and respect for social progress. They are institutions which seek to increase their profits above everything else. They are not trying to do evil, but instead are attempting to increase their stock
price in the easiest way for them. And it just so turns out that the most convenient way for facebook to increase their stock price is by damaging our society. By collecting as much information about us as possible and selling it to corporations. The short term consequences of this are mostly inconsequential. You will begin to notice more and more targeted ads. Ads that seem to understand what you want better than you do. It's Harmless. But what happens when the world restructures (as it usually does), and the people currently in power are challenged? What happens when people rise up against a government that knows absolutely everything about them? What happens when a government knows who the troublemakers are going to be before they themselves know it? This is where the future is leading. Is it hypocritical to use a platform as a tool to protest it? But the world should not be challenged from where we would like it to be, but from where it currently stands. Should we protest from outside of facebook to be congruent? That would just be preaching to the choir, reassuring the converted that they've made the right choice. But to truly effect change, this message should be shared with the people it affects the most, this way, the platform will not be using to prolong the life of dying industries, but as the creator of its own grave-diggers.
