TEACHERS, STOP REPEATING “KEEP QUIET!” EVERY 5 MINUTES.
If your classroom feels difficult to control, the problem may not be that your learners are “too stubborn.”
They may simply need clear classroom rules, taught from day one and applied consistently.
Here are 20 classroom rules every teacher can establish with learners at the beginning of a new term:
20 CLASSROOM RULES FOR LEARNERS
1. Respect everyone.
No insults, bullying, mocking, or disrespectful behaviour.
2. Come to class on time.
Be seated and ready before the lesson begins.
3. Listen when someone is speaking.
Don't interrupt the teacher or your classmates.
4. Raise your hand before speaking.
Wait for permission before contributing.
5. Come prepared.
Bring your books, writing materials, assignments, and required learning resources.
6. Complete your classwork and assignments.
Do your work and submit it on time.
7. Keep the classroom clean.
Use the appropriate waste bin and keep your surroundings tidy.
8. Take care of school property.
Don't damage desks, chairs, books, boards, or other school resources.
9. No fighting.
Disagreements should be handled peacefully.
10. No bullying or intimidation.
Every learner deserves to feel safe in the classroom.
11. Don't cheat.
Be honest during tests, examinations, and assignments.
12. Use respectful language.
No abusive, vulgar, or threatening words.
13. Don't leave the classroom without permission.
Always inform the teacher before going out.
14. Avoid distractions.
Phones, games, and other distracting items should not interfere with learning.
15. Follow reasonable instructions.
Listen carefully and carry out classroom instructions promptly.
16. Respect other people's belongings.
Never take, hide, damage, or use another learner's property without permission.
17. Participate in lessons.
Ask questions, contribute to discussions, and take learning activities seriously.
18. Don't disturb others.
No unnecessary shouting, running, playing, or side conversations during lessons.
19. Take responsibility for your actions.
If you make a mistake, admit it, learn from it, and correct it.
20. Be kind and fair to everyone.
Respect differences in ability, appearance, background, and opinions.
BUT HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART:
Don't just write these rules on the classroom wall.
Explain them.
Discuss why they matter.
Make sure learners understand the expected behaviour.
Then apply the rules consistently and fairly.
A classroom without clear expectations can quickly become difficult to manage.
But when learners know:
✅ What is expected
✅ What is unacceptable
✅ Why the rules exist
✅ What happens when rules are broken
…it becomes easier to create a calm, respectful and productive learning environment.
TEACHERS, REMEMBER:
Discipline is not about frightening learners.
It is about creating an environment where learning, respect, responsibility and safety can thrive.
