Revising the Past
It's true that we didn't choose how we were born, the family we were born into, or many of our early childhood experiences.
We didn't choose the environment we grew up in, the disappointments, the neglect, the rejection, or the painful experiences that shaped us.
But there's an interesting and comforting truth:
We can choose what we do with our lives from here.
We can choose who we spend our lives with, where we live, what we do, what we believe about ourselves, and what we want our lives to become.
No matter how we started or what has happened to us, we can still choose our lives.
The past does not have to determine the future.
Things we couldn't control then do not have to stand in the way of the things we can control now.
One of the ways I help people move forward in my work is what I call "revising the past."
Revising the past does not mean denying what happened. It doesn't mean pretending the abuse, neglect, rejection, disappointment, or pain never existed.
It means looking at the experience again and changing the way we understand and carry it.
Sometimes, an experience happened years ago, but the meaning we attached to it is still controlling how we see ourselves today.
"I was rejected, so I must be unworthy,"
"I was neglected, so I must not matter."
"I failed, so I can never succeed."
But an experience is not an identity.
What happened to you does not have to define what is possible for you
In this process, we take the experience that continues to hold you back and ask:
"What would this have looked like under ideal, safe, and supportive circumstances?"
We create a healthier version of the experience, not to erase reality, but to help you recognise what you needed, what you deserved, and what you can now choose for yourself.
You begin to see the past differently.
Instead of only seeing how it hurt you, you begin to understand it in a way that supports your growth and your future.
You stop judging your present by your past
You stop judging your potential by what happened to you
You may not be able to change what happened, but you can change the story you continue to tell yourself about what happened.
