WHY DO WE NEED DARTS? 📐✂️

A dart isn't just a random triangle we put on a bodice.

Its job is to help transform a flat piece of fabric into a shape that accommodates the curves of the body.

That's why dart manipulation is such an important part of pattern drafting.

The dart can be moved to different positions without necessarily changing the amount of shaping.

For example:

➡️ Waist dart
➡️ Bust dart
➡️ Shoulder dart
➡️ Centre-front dart
➡️ French dart

Same principle.

Different position.

That's the beauty of pattern manipulation. 🤌🏾

LET'S BE HONEST ABOUT FASHION TRAINING… 👀

Watching sewing tutorials is not the same as learning fashion design.

You can watch 100 videos and still struggle to draft a basic pattern.

Why?

Because watching is passive.

Learning requires you to:

✂️ Practise
📐 Draft
🧵 Make mistakes
🔍 Identify the problem
✂️ Correct it
🔁 Try again

Don't just consume fashion content.

Use it.

A. “I'll just make a quick adjustment.”

3 hours later… 😭

B. “This fabric is enough.”

Fabric finishes before the sleeve. 🥲

C. “I don't need to write down the measurements.”

Comes back tomorrow and forgets everything. 😂

D. “I'll just sew it without making a toile.”

The fitting says otherwise. 😭

YOUR PATTERN IS NOT THE PROBLEM EVERY TIME 👀✂️

Sometimes the problem is the measurement you started with.

If your bust, waist, hip, shoulder or length measurement is wrong, your pattern can be perfectly drafted according to your method and STILL not fit properly.

That's why pattern drafting isn't just about knowing where to draw lines.

You need to understand:

📌 Body measurements
📌 Ease
📌 Body proportions
📌 Dart manipulation
📌 Garment balance

A beautiful pattern on paper means nothing if it doesn't translate properly to the body.
