A Kaduna-based journalist with Nagarta Radio, Farida Isiak, and her parents have reportedly been detained by police in Mararaban Jos, Kaduna State, following a dispute over N100 change from a charcoal sale, according to family sources.

Isiak, 23, was reportedly taken into custody at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, hours after her parents had been detained over the disagreement.

The dispute began on Monday, October 19, when Isiak's mother sold N400 worth of charcoal to a girl sent by a neighbour. The girl paid N500, but the mother reportedly asked her to return later for the N100 balance because she had no change. Family sources said the outstanding amount was subsequently paid.

The following day, the neighbour reportedly bought another N400 worth of charcoal, paid N500 and demanded N200 in change, claiming that she had not received the previous day's N100 balance. Isiak's mother maintained that the earlier balance had already been settled.

The disagreement escalated after the neighbour allegedly insulted her and called her sister. The two women reportedly attempted to force their way into the mother's house, prompting her to threaten to pour hot water on them. They subsequently left.

“Ndarani Should Challenge Incumbent, Not Attack Nami” — Bashir Gana

Bashir Gana says the 2027 Niger governorship debate should focus on governance, accountability and development rather than attacks on opposition candidates.

Bashir Muhammad Gana, has called on Hon. Mohammed Ndarani Mohammed to direct his criticism at the incumbent administration in Niger State rather than opposition governorship candidate Mohammed Nami.

Gana made the call while reacting to recent comments attributed to Ndarani concerning Nami's decision to challenge the incumbent administration and his position on the recovery of allegedly misappropriated public funds.

According to Gana, Nami is a candidate seeking the mandate of the people and is not currently responsible for governing the state. He therefore argued that scrutiny of government performance should primarily be directed at those currently in office.

“Instead of attacking a candidate who is yet to assume office, Ndarani should challenge the incumbent administration on its record, policies and performance,” Gana said.

He maintained that the growing criticism of Nami could increase public attention around his candidacy rather than weaken it.

Gana also described Nami as an experienced administrator, citing his previous leadership roles at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), where he served as chairman under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He argued that Nami's experience should form part of the public assessment of his suitability for the governorship, while acknowledging that voters would ultimately judge candidates based on their records, policies and ability to deliver on their promises.

Gana urged political actors in the state to shift the campaign conversation towards issues including public accountability, security, education, healthcare, management of public resources and infrastructure.

He further called for political candidates to present their records and policy proposals to the electorate rather than relying on personal attacks.

“The people of Niger State deserve a debate centred on competence, accountability and development. Candidates should make their cases to the electorate and allow the people to decide,” Gana said.
