WHAT THEY DON’T TELL YOU ABOUT THE TAILORING BUSINESS – EPISODE 2

Your work has to be seen!!!!!!!

One thing they don’t tell you about this business is that sewing well is not enough.

People need to see your work.

I’ve had clients walk into my shop and say,
“I always see your work displayed outside, that’s why I decided to come in.”

In fact, one of my best offline clients came because of the outfits I had on display.

That taught me a lesson I’ll never forget.

Don’t keep your best work folded inside the shop.

Dress your mannequins.

Display your beautiful outfits where people can easily see them.

Your display can start a conversation before you even say, “Good afternoon.”

The same thing applies online.

I’ve also had clients who reached out because they kept seeing my work on social media.

Some saw a dress I posted.
Some followed my page for a while before finally sending me a message.

The truth is, your work is one of your biggest marketing tools.

Whether it’s on a mannequin outside your shop or on someone’s phone screen, let people keep seeing what you do.

You never know which display will bring your next customer.

SOMEONE SAID, SHE STARTED BUSINESS SOME MONTHS AGO AND SALES HAVE BEEN LOW!!!!!.

Reading through the comments, I started thinking about tailoring.

Sometimes, we fashion designers like to carry plenty things on our head 😄

You just started, and you’re sewing male wear and female wear.

You’re selling tailoring materials.

You’re selling accessories.

You’re thinking of ready-to-wear.

You’re planning to train students too.

Everything at the same time.

Meanwhile, people are still trying to know who you are and what you do.

If somebody wants to recommend you, what exactly will they say?

This is one reason I don’t sew male wear.

Not because it’s bad, but because I chose to focus on what I do.

I’ve also had a lot of people advise me to start selling tailoring accessories and materials. To be honest, it’s something I may consider in the future, especially when I have a bigger space.

But for now, I would rather focus on the area of the business I want to grow.

I just feel that when you’re still building, focus can help a lot.

People remember you faster when they know exactly what you do and what you’re known for.

As the business grows, you can always add other things later.

Just something that came to my mind while reading the comments.

Don’t be that madam that only sees faults.🙏🙏🙏🙏

The moment an apprentice makes a mistake, you have plenty to say. You correct, complain, and point out everything they didn’t do well.😔😔

But when they finally get it right, suddenly you’re quiet.
🤨
I honestly wonder how some people do it.

You saw the improvement.
You saw the effort.
You saw that they paid attention to previous corrections.

Yet, not one “well done.”

We all know how good it feels when someone notices our effort and encourages us. That little encouragement can make someone put in even more effort.

If people work or learn under you, don’t let correction be the only thing they receive from you.

Appreciate them too.

As for me, if you work or learn under me, you already know that when you get it right, even in the little things, I will appreciate you. It gives me joy seeing people improve and become better at what they do.

A few kind words won’t reduce you. They might be exactly what someone needs to keep going.

WHAT THEY DON’T TELL YOU ABOUT FASHION BUSINESS

What they don’t tell you about fashion business is that talent alone is not enough.

You can sew very well and still struggle in business.

Why?

Because customers don’t only pay for good sewing.

They pay for:
✔️ Good communication
✔️ Keeping to delivery dates
✔️ Professionalism
✔️ Consistency
✔️ A good fitting experience

I’ve seen talented designers lose clients because they couldn’t manage these things.

The truth is, sewing is one skill.
Running a fashion business is another skill entirely.

The earlier you learn both, the better your chances of growing.
