I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE

What is the greatest thing you can give to satisfy your cravings?
How far would you go to get what you want from Jesus Christ?

We often joke that the height of cravings belongs to pregnant women. They will move mountains to satisfy a longing.

But how do we explain grown men and women, not pregnant, traveling across water for one to two hours just to eat bread and fish?

In John 6, Jesus fed the 5,000. A few days later, the same crowd returned to the site of the miracle, hoping for another meal. Disappointed that He wasn’t there, they reasoned He must be in Capernaum.

So they boarded boats and made the journey, roughly eight miles, to find Him.

They were not seeking His teaching.
They wanted more bread. More fish.

Jesus saw straight through them. He didn’t soften the truth or ignore their motives. He exposed the shallowness of their pursuit, but He didn’t stop there.

He tried to redirect their hearts.
He invited them to see their real need.

Yet they were so captivated by bread and fish that they missed the Bread of Life standing in front of them.

“I am the Bread of Life,” He declared.

It had only been a few days since they ate, yet they craved again. And even if He had fed them once more, the cycle would repeat.

Because it can never truly satisfy.

Like that bread and fish, everything the world offers leaves us hungry again.
Nothing satisfies.
Except Jesus.

The human heart is always reaching, desiring, yearning, searching for fulfillment.
But we try to feed a spiritual hunger with temporary things:
wealth, power, influence, recognition, validation.

And still, the soul remains restless.

Why?

Because the soul is not hungry for things.
It is hungry for life.

When humanity fell, the soul lost its vitality. Since then, it has longed for what was lost, the breath of God, true life, divine communion.

This hunger is not carnal, so carnal things cannot satisfy it.

The only food the soul truly longs for is Christ, the Bread of Life.

Something happened recently that took me down memory lane, and in revisiting an incident from over ten years ago, I learned something entirely fresh.

My mum was in charge of a cooperative, which meant she dealt with all kinds of people. And as life would have it, some people come with trouble permanently attached.

There was one woman in particular, infamous for her hostility. One day, she stormed into my mum’s shop and began to hurl insults at her without restraint. My mum’s response was unexpected but deliberate. She said nothing.

They say silence is the best answer to a fool, and that day, silence was my mum’s chosen language.

Now, this wasn’t because she lacked fire. Anyone who knew my mum knew she could match energy when confronted. But that day, she chose to watch. Unfortunately, her silence only emboldened the woman. The insults grew louder, uglier, and eventually crossed into physical aggression.

That was where my sister and I drew the line.

I knew I couldn’t fight, but my mouth was fully trained for battle, so I jumped in with words. My sister, however, was made of hotter stuff. We urged the woman to leave, but she refused, still raging.

Then, suddenly, my sister disappeared.

Only for a brief moment.

She returned holding a spatula — the turning stick — and charged toward the woman with unrestrained fury. The effect was immediate. The woman bolted out of the shop as though her life depended on it. Those who had been restraining her seconds earlier now turned to restrain my sister instead.

It wasn’t funny then. But thinking back now, I can’t help but smile.

We had defended our mother. Surely, at the very least, we deserved a “thank you.”

Instead, we were thoroughly scolded.

At the time, it made no sense to me. As a matter of fact, it wasn’t until just yesterday — when the memory resurfaced — that I finally understood the lesson hidden in that moment.

This is exactly how the Holy Spirit works. No matter how noble your intentions seem, no matter how convinced you are that you are “doing it for God,” when your actions step out of alignment with His character and His instruction, they become unacceptable.

In place of a “Well done,” you receive correction.

Good intentions are not enough.
Right actions, done the wrong way, are still wrong.
Your good must be done in obedience.

“To obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”
— 1 Samuel 15:22 (KJV

It was a Monday, heavy with the familiar weight Mondays often carry. After hours of attending to customers of every kind, I returned home burning with fever. I barely managed to climb the stairs to our apartment.

When I reached the door, it was locked.

My father was inside, yet I stood outside. Minutes stretched into hours. My eyes filled with tears, and my heart thudded with anger as I waited for the door to open.

With every passing moment, the fever worsened. My strength ebbed away until I sank onto the floor, exhausted and overwhelmed. From where I sat, I watched two neighbors arrive. Each one unlocked their door and stepped easily into the comfort of home.

My anger grew louder. My disappointment deepened.

Why can’t he just open the door?

Five hours passed.

My gaze finally fell on the spare key tucked into the corner of my bag. It had been there all along. With the last ounce of strength left in me, I reached for it. My hands trembled. My lips shook. My eyes were red and swollen as I stood up, inserted the key, and turned it twice.

The door opened.

I staggered inside.

Dear believer, you already have the key. It is time to rise, even if you must drag yourself, into the place of prayer. That is where access is granted. That is where answers are found.

Schools resumed last week, but my mind clearly didn’t. I was unusually sluggish with preparing Asa for school. I suppose I hadn’t fully shaken off the holiday mood, because she arrived at school a little late most days that week.

On Wednesday, while picking her up, I began to reflect on how the school runs had gone since Monday. I woke up early enough. I started preparations early enough. Yet somehow, we still didn’t get to school on time.

Then a thought crept in:

“However you begin your week is how it will go. Since you were late on Monday, you’ll be late all through the week.”

An old belief, picked up from God-knows-where, surfaced in my mind. I know I’m not alone. Many people believe the same thing.

“We’ll adjust next week,” I concluded.

Just as my mind moved on to the next issue, a question stopped me short:

“Why wait till next week to make a change?”

That question lingered.

Why do we wait for a new week, a new month, or a new year before correcting what we already recognize as wrong? Why postpone change when awareness has already come?

Correction and change require immediate action. The moment you recognize the need to adjust, act.

Think of the prodigal son, the one who demanded his inheritance, journeyed far away, and squandered it all. The moment he came to his senses, he didn’t schedule his return. He didn’t wait for a better time. He rose immediately and went back home.

Dear friend, do not postpone your return.

Delay can be dangerous.

About a month ago, I noticed some little patches of discoloration on my face, so I got a few products to treat them.

I expected the products to work quickly. Every day, I checked the mirror to see if there was any improvement, but nothing seemed to change. I grew impatient, and many times I considered switching products. What made it more frustrating was that I had used one of these products before and saw visible results within days.

Yesterday, as I was thinking about this, the Holy Spirit gently whispered to me, “This is what it means to be anxious.”

I began to reflect more deeply.

Often, we say we trust God with our situation, yet we cannot rest. We keep checking for signs. We constantly look for evidence that something is happening. And when we don’t see immediate change, we begin to consider alternatives, backup plans, and other options.

In the process, we forget that God has done it before—sometimes even faster than we expected.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6

Once you have handed a matter over to God, faith is not proved by constant checking, but by restful trust.

Trust the process. Rest while He works.

Did you know that the most powerful book of worship ever written was born from human response to life’s hardest moments?

The Psalms are not polished speeches.
Long before they became elements of worship
They were cries, tears, hopes, and praises poured out through three seasons of Israel’s history:
the Monarchy, the Exile, and the Return.

In palace and in captivity,
in victory and in ruins,
people lifted their voices to God.
Their personal pain and national crisis
became holy songs.

Is your response to life sacred enough to become worship?

No matter the storm you are in right now, worship is the perfect response.

Hey sis, spare me a few minutes. I know you’re familiar with body count, but let’s talk about body worth.

How much is your body worth? In naira or dollars, how much would you say it is worth?

Some ladies are worth: all-expense-paid trips to the Maldives, luxury apartments in high-brow cities, and six-figure monthly allowances.

On the other hand, there’s a lady on a street corner who is worth no more than noodles, eggs, and a chilled malt.

What makes the difference? Carriage and packaging. But this is not even the crux of the matter.

Now imagine this: what is the greatest fortune you think you could get through your body? You don reason am ba?

That, my dear, is the least of what your brain is capable of producing.

What you might get by relying only on your body is the bare minimum compared to what you can achieve when you stop limiting yourself and put your mind to work. Your body changes (more like depreciate) with time and use, but your brain grows sharper with use.

So stop seeing yourself as small. You are more than this, and you can do better.
Your body is not an object to be priced. It is a vessel carrying treasure.

“You can’t be a child of God and have delays in life.”
That statement sounds spiritual… but it’s not biblical.

Some of the most anointed people in Scripture waited.
Abraham waited.
Joseph waited.
David waited.
Jesus waited.

Yet today, when a believer goes through a difficult season, we rush to judge:

“Are you praying?”
“Did you sin?”
“Are you even saved?”

As if hardship is proof of distance from God.

But faith is not proven by speed.
Faith is proven by staying — staying when nothing is moving, staying when the promise feels slow, staying when everyone else is advancing.

Waiting is not punishment.
Waiting is process.

God does not only grow things in the spotlight —
He grows them underground first.

Roots are formed in silence.
Strength is built in hidden places.
Character is shaped in seasons no one applauds.

Delay is rarely a consequence.
More often, it is preparation.

God is aligning people.
God is arranging timing.
God is deepening your faith.

If you’re in a waiting season, it doesn’t mean you missed God.
It means God is working deeper than you can see.

You’re not behind.
You’re being built.

Hold on.
Your season will speak.

There is a river of God flowing in me, bringing joy, peace, and renewal. I am God’s dwelling place, and because He is within me, I will not be moved. Help rises for me right on time, at the break of every new day. Though nations rage and systems shake, I remain secure, for the Lord Almighty is with me. God lifts His voice on my behalf, and every opposition melts away. The God of Jacob is my fortress—my defense, my refuge, and my victory.

Amen.
