Basic Tailoring Terms

1. Seam – The line where two pieces of fabric are sewn together.

2. Hem – The finished edge of a garment, usually folded and sewn.

3. Dart – A tapered tuck used to shape fabric to fit body curves.

4. Notch – A small cut or mark used for alignment when sewing pieces together.

5. Selvage – The tightly woven edge of a fabric that doesn’t fray.

6. Grainline – The direction of the threads in fabric; important for cutting patterns properly.

7. Bias – Diagonal direction of the fabric; it stretches more than the grainline.

8. Muslin – A test garment made from inexpensive fabric to check fit and design.

Garment Construction Terms

9. Bodice – The upper part of a dress or top.

10. Yoke – A shaped pattern piece that forms part of a garment, typically at the shoulder or hip.

11. Placket – The opening of a garment, usually where buttons or zippers are placed.

12. Facing – A piece of fabric used to finish the edges of a garment (like necklines and armholes).

13. Lining – A layer of fabric on the inside of a garment to hide seams and give structure.

14. Interfacing – Material used between layers of fabric for stiffness or stability.

The ability of children to dream is a natural instinct instilled by the Creator. No matter how poor or rich we are, whether we were born in the bush village of an underdeveloped nation or amidst the marble floors of the aristocracy of society, we all have childhood dreams. These dreams are visual manifestations of our purpose, seeds of destiny planted in the soil of our imagination.

I am convinced that God created and gave us the gift of imagination to provide us with a glimpse of our purpose in life and to activate the hidden ability within each of us.

Purpose is the reason why something was made. It is the end for which the means exist. It is the source of the dream and the vision you carried in your heart from childhood. It is the key to your fulfillment.

The world needs what God deposited in you for the benefit of your contemporaries and all the generations to follow.
