The Fear of the Unknown

I once had a friend who worked with a company for many years. He was doing okay, but deep inside, he wanted more. Because no matter how good a salary is, it can never fully carry a man’s vision. He had dreams of starting his own business, but one thing kept him stuck.... the fear of the unknown.

“What if I fail?”
“What if I resign and can’t survive?”
“What if business swallows me up?”

Some of us even told him then, “Don’t leave until you’re sure you have another job or a fully set-up business.” But life doesn’t always give you the chance to see everything clearly before you move.

Three months ago, I met this same friend. With a smile on his face, he told me he finally resigned, started his business, and today he’s doing well. His only regret was not starting earlier.

He said something profound: “Many times, fear keeps us trapped in our comfort zone. We think we must figure everything out before taking a step, but in reality, we just need to start from somewhere. Clarity comes on the way.”

That reminded me of an example: life is like driving at night from Enugu to Port Harcourt. When your headlights are on, you can’t see the whole road or Port Harcourt from the beginning. You only see a few meters ahead. But as you keep moving, the road keeps opening up.

That’s how God leads us. When He gives you an instruction, He doesn’t show you the entire plan at once. He just tells you to start, and as you move, He keeps unveiling the rest.

👉 Many of us are where we are today not because we lack dreams, but because fear has tied us down. The fear of failure. The fear of uncertainty. The fear of leaving the comfort zone. But the truth is, fear of the unknown has destroyed more destinies than failure ever did.

Sometimes, you don’t need to see the whole staircase before you climb. You just need to take the first step.

Don’t let fear stop you from your next level.

The Power of Small Groups & Associations

Back in my early days at the University of Port Harcourt, there was no Opi Undergraduate Association, Uniport branch. We had people from my town in the school, but there was no organized group that brought us together.

Eventually, the idea came up to form the association. To be sincere, I wasn’t so involved in the beginning. I didn’t fully understand the importance of it then. But as time went on, I began to see clearly that there’s real power in joining small groups and associations.

Whether it’s in the village, church, office, or business area, being part of a group makes a big difference. It gives you encouragement when life gets tough, connections that can open doors, friendships that last beyond the group, and even opportunities to learn from people ahead of you. Most importantly, it gives you a sense of belonging, because no one was created to walk through life alone.

And here’s the interesting part: if you don’t see a group to join, you can form one. That’s how social clubs, town unions, old boys’ associations, and even professional bodies came into existence. Someone saw the need for unity and connection, and they took the bold step to start.

Over the years, I have joined some small groups and I can tell you from experience, they have added value to my life. They have shaped my mindset, created opportunities, and given me a sense of family wherever I find myself.

So my encouragement to you is simple: don’t isolate yourself. If there’s a good group around you, plug in. If there is not, be bold enough to start one. Because truly, iron sharpens iron, and life was never designed to be lived alone.

Please remember:
God is never late.
And your journey is still valid.

Let’s keep growing, step by step.

What’s one lesson life or faith has taught you recently?
I would love to hear from you, let’s encourage one another.
