Lucas opened the note. It read:

Lucas,
I thought it would be easier to leave quietly. I thought it would be easier to blame you or hate you, but I owe you words, I owe you so much because you gave me more than I expected.

I want you to know that, you were never broken to me Lucas, not when you couldn't sleep, not when you hid your struggles from your kids, not when you refused help, not when you looked at yourself like a man you no longer recognized.

You were kind, you were patient, you were gentle in ways others never experienced. Everyone told me you weren't human but you were, from the way you loved Brielle, to the way you let me love your kids.

They changed me, they taught me how to live life differently.

Noah was always so tough but he always cared for his siblings, he was always looking out for everyone. He pretended not to need bed time stories but he always fell asleep before the last page.

Rowan was soft spoken but he always listened. He was warm and kind. He'd never eat pasta except I made it.

Owen was a sweet boy. He'd always brag about how big he was and how he could brush his own hair but he'd always want me to fix it properly afterwards.

I'm never gonna forget how we laughed and had fun together. Thank you for letting me love them. Thank you for letting me love you everyday without judgement, without question.

Lucas I want you to understand that I didn't leave because of what happened last night and I didn't leave because I didn't forgive you. I didn't leave because I wanted to or because I stopped caring.

I left because I realized that loving someone means knowing when your presence brings more harm than peace. It means realizing that some decisions have to be made to make the people you love happy even when you aren't happy.

There are some things I can't explain without causing damage. Lucas, I don't want your kids growing up carrying scars they don't deserve and I don't want Brielle to keep getting hurt because of me. All my life I've always caused pain in whatever relationships I got involved in, family, friends, but this time, I'd rather walk away than tear down what I claim to love so much.

You once asked me if you were too much for me Lucas. You never were. You were never a burden.

You were home. You were my safe space. I never felt judged when I was around you.

You and your kids gave Brielle and me the family we never had. Every time you stood up for us, you showed us what a real family was. That's why leaving hurts the way it does, that's why everything you do hurts me twice more than it should, that's why hating you is so difficult.

Lucas please don't hate me. Please don't let the kids hate me. Please remember that I stayed only as long as I could serve happiness.

Love has to walk away sometimes but it never has to end.

Please take care of yourself and the kids. Brielle is always going to remember her papa, her hero, her dairy and her playmate forever. I'm never gonna forget you guys either. I can't even if I wanted to. I've become too used to your presence walking away still seems like I'm carrying you about.

Lucas, don't forget, you're not a broken man, you're the best dad in the world and a man who taught me how to love again.

Till we meet again… Lythia.

Lucas read the letter again a second time. Slower, the third time, thinking maybe the words would make sense if he gave them patience. Every time he reread, he pictured her saying those words.

He got up and stepped deeper into the room slowly. It wasn't just three or four steps; he took more steps and the kids were shocked.

“Dad...” Noah called out.

“Take your siblings and leave, Noah. Shut the door behind you.” He cut Noah, his eyes still fixed on the note.

Noah obediently took his siblings and shut the door behind them as they left.

As soon as the door clicked close, Lucas’s grip on the paper began to weaken; his fingers began to tremble.

“You always have to make the tough decisions, Lythia.” He hadn't realized how far he had walked until he fell on his knees beside her bed.

The room felt too big, too empty. He looked around. Her dressing table that always held her jewelry, he could see her smiling in front of the mirror.

He could see her selecting clothes in her wardrobe. He saw her sitting on the bed playing with Brielle in her favourite nighty, the pink one she wore the first day she stepped into his room to help him work.

Then realization hit him. She loved him too much to hate him or question his choices.

His chest tightened painfully. So painful the paper slipped off his hand while he held onto his chest.

He remembered how she was the only one who could help him whenever he lost control. His eyes watered as he fell to the ground completely.

“I didn't love you enough, Lythia.” He tried so hard to hold on but his entire body trembled. His heart threatened to burst out of his chest. He could hear every organ in his body running faster than they used to. He screamed in pain once, a second time, then the tears finally rolled down his cheek.

“I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.” His breath came in broken gasps as he struggled with himself.

He was losing control and he didn't fight back. He laid there beside her bed and cried. “You loved me but I couldn't love you enough. I'm sorry.”

At first it was silent sobs. He bit hard into his fingers to silence himself, but the pain in his heart was more severe.

For the first time since the accident, Lucas Denovan cried helplessly, his veins popped and his skin turned red.

As he shut his eyes, still trying to steady his heartbeat, he saw her smiling at him, Brielle running into his arms, Lythia loving the kids with her all.

He broke completely this time. He cried, not quietly, not with dignity, the way men do when they realize they failed. Lythia didn't fail him; he failed her, he failed love.

On the other side of town, Lythia lay on the floor, a similar position to Lucas, crying her eyes out. She held onto the necklace he gave her while her other finger brushed the bracelet. She couldn't stop thinking of the family, of Lucas; she couldn't stop loving him.

CHAPTER 1 - THE WEDDING IS CALLED OFF

“I ran away!”.

Three words I never thought would define my life.

My wedding, the most anticipated event in the entire country, was called off just like that. Everyone was so eager to find out who the bride of the youngest master of the Denovan family was. It was me. It should have been me, but Marcus called it off, just a few weeks before our wedding. I was pregnant, and he wouldn't even let me explain. It was the worst day of my entire life.

I lay curled on my bed, trembling under the blanket as the test result from the hospital continued replaying in my head. It was positive. The same news that was supposed to bring joy now felt like a death sentence. Marcus didn't even want to see my face, how could I tell him?

Hot tears rolled down my cheeks and I couldn't help it, I couldn't stop it, it flowed like running water from a tap. I was swallowed in shame and guilt, my mind went places and my thoughts went wild, frightening and desperate. It felt like either way my life would crush me.

No one else knew the wedding was called off; it was just my best friend and I. If my father found out, I would be dead meat; he would bury me alive for sure. Marcus and I had been the perfect campus couple, we were adored, envied, and inseparable, but when things went bad, he didn't even give me a chance to explain. The look in his eyes was cold and distant. I could feel that he had already slipped off my finger, and the pain in my heart tripled as I ran out in tears, but he didn't even turn to look at me.

I broke all over again as my mind kept playing every moment we shared together and his cold rejection.

The door suddenly swung open, snapping me out of my thoughts. Carissa walked in, my roommate, my best friend, and the only person who held my sanity. She had just returned from work. Her sweet fragrance filled the room before she even spoke.

“Hey, Pookie, how are you feeling?” She asked climbing into bed beside me.

“Worse”. I whispered, my voice cracking.

She wore a sad face, her eyes mirrored my pain. “Did you get the result from the hospital?”. She asked gently.

I couldn't speak. My tears spoke for me. Carissa pulled me into a tight hug and let me sob on her shirt until I felt better. She was the sweetest and most blunt person I knew.

“Did you tell him?”. She asked finally.

“Marcus hates my guts…”. I choked. “He wouldn't listen to me”.

“Maybe he'd react differently”.

I looked up at Carissa. I wanted to believe her, but the Marcus who dragged me out of his house that day wasn't my Marcus. My Marcus was gone, lost far away, where I couldn't reach him. But deep down I hoped she was right.

I picked up my phone. My fingers trembled as I tried to place the call, but my phone rang first.

My father!

My heart dropped. If he found out I was pregnant, and Marcus called off the wedding, there was no escaping death for me.

Carissa grabbed my phone from my shaking hand and answered.

“Good evening sir”. She spoke softly.

“Where's my daughter?”. His voice thundered through the speaker.

“Erm sir. She's- she's taking a quick shower”.

“Tell her to pack her things. My driver is coming to get her. She has a lot to explain to me”. He ended the call without waiting for a response.

Carissa and I stared at each other.

“It's over,” I whispered. “He knows”. I grabbed my hair with my fingers at both sides of my ear.

Carissa suddenly stood up, pacing. Her eyes darted around the room like she was coming up with something. Something dangerous.

“What if you run away?”. She spoke finally. “I mean really far away”.

I turned to her in disbelief. “Carissa… he'll kill me if he finds me”.

“I know. But he won't, trust me. Not where I'm thinking”. She sat beside me on the bed and continued. “Listen Lythia, you have to leave this city. The pain, the shame, the problems, all of it. You have to start afresh somewhere new. A new life, a new you. My cousin lives really far away, he can help you, all I have to do is place a call and trust me, your father wouldn't find you, at least not for a while, until you've pieced your life together again”.

Her words were reckless, frightening, and insane, but somehow, it felt right to my drowning soul. Escaping all of this wasn't a bad idea; the only thing I couldn't escape would be this baby. I wasn't going to kill it, so I could as well escape with it.

I took a deep breath before speaking. “Ok. I'll go, but what about you?”.

“Don't worry about me, darling. But if your father's driver arrives and we're still here, we'll be cooked. Let's pack fast”. She spoke already headed to the wardrobe.

Carissa would have to run away, too, and that means she’d have to leave her job just to protect me. She was the best thing that had actually ever happened in my life.

We stuffed everything we had into two suitcases and ran. I left everything that night. Left my father, left Marcus, left my previously perfect life, left the wedding of the year that I would never have.

And I even left Carissa. She refused to come with me. She said she was part of the old life I needed to bury if I truly wanted to start over. After all, she was the reason I met Marcus.

Leaving her broke me, almost as much as Marcus's rejection, but still, I stepped onto the plane with nothing but fear, a baby, and hope that everything would get better as soon as I escaped this city.

It would be a new place, a new me, and a new future. I was already looking forward to it. But as the plane took off into the night sky I couldn't shake off the question in my head.

Have I escaped or stepped into something far worse? Would this new city bring me more pain or redemption?

Will Marcus come around? Will her father find out? Would the new city crush her or redeem her?
