July 1st is Keti Koti: A day to remember the end of slavery in Suriname and the Dutch Caribbean. Keti Koti means “the chains are broken” and is a day to remember the past, celebrate freedom, and honor Surinamese history and culture.
To give this day the attention it deserves, we invited three Surinamese individuals to share what Suriname means to them. Through their personal stories, we want to celebrate the beauty of Surinamese culture and create space for reflection, connection, and conversation.
Their answers were: food, love, tears, culture, unity, and freedom. And above all, they all shared one message:
Suriname is home❤️🇸🇷
