In het Badhuis Leidsebuurt zal er komende 10 oktober een filmmiddag worden gegeven. Hier zijn mensen van de LHBTI+ gemeenschap vrij om zichzelf te zijn.

Badhuis en Seeing Things Q***rly starten met LHBTI+filmmiddag

Het Badhuis Leidsebuurt en (design studio) Seeing Things Q***rly hebben de handen ineen geslagen en komen met een maandelijkse filmmiddag voor Haarlemse LHBTI+ers en bondgenoten. Zondag 10 oktober, de dag voor coming-out-day, is de eerste filmvertoning in het Badhuis met de Australische komische roadmovie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
Het Badhuis Leidsebuurt kwam onlangs in het nieuws nadat de regenboogvlag van het buurthuis door onbekenden in brand gestoken werd, waarop de buurt terugsloeg met een vrolijke vlaggenactie. Sindsdien hangt de Leidsebuurt vol met regenboogvlaggen. "Door dit incident zijn we in contact gekomen met verschillende mensen vanuit de Haarlems
regenbooggemeenschap", vertelt Juliette Van Dijk, één van de vrijwilligers.
"Zo ook met Maikel Bongaerts, de oprichter van Seeing Things Q***rly. Hij vertelde dat er niet veel plekken in Haarlem meer zijn waar LHBTI+ers terecht kunnen."

Maikel voelde zich direct welkom bij het Badhuis en sloot zich aan bij de splinternieuwe regenboogwerkgroep welke tot deze filmmiddag is gekomen. "De bedoeling is dat het een laagdrempelige gezellige middag wordt met een film, een drankje en een hapje. Een plek waar iedereen zichzelf kan zijn", aldus de ontwerper.

Als kers op de taart gaan leerlingen van Het Schoter voor de eerste editie van deze filmmiddag, en ter ere van coming-out-day, koekjes bakken voor de bezoekers van de filmmiddag.

Haarlem Maikel studeerde aan de Kunstacademie van Maastricht en rondde daarna het Fashion Institute Arnhem af. Bij die masteroplei- ding van ArtEZ wordt jaarlijks maar een handvol studenten aangenomen. Hij won in 2007 de Frans Molenaar Award en maakte met het gewonnen prijzengeld onder zijn eigen naam een mannencollectie.
Vervolgens werkte hij tien jaar als modeontwerper voor gerenommeerde namen als Victor & Rolf en Tommy Hilfiger.
Onder meer vertoefde hij vijf jaar in Londen. Daar werkte hij bij het label Jaeger, waar hij een kledinglijn voor mannen ontwierp. „Ook heb ik daar de uniformen ontworpen voor Kensington Palace. Al het personeel daar loopt in mijn ontwerpen.”
Ervaring
Aansluitend volgde een periode bij modemerk Thomas Pink. „Ik wilde gewoon eerst een tijd ervaring op

doen bij andere merken voor ik een eigen label zou beginnen.”
Na zes jaar Londen werd het ver- langen naar Nederland, zijn familie en vrienden steeds groter en hij sol- liciteerde bij Tommy Hilfiger in Amsterdam. „Daar heb ik mij vooral beziggehouden met de jassencollectie.” Al die tijd richtte hij zich alleen op kleding voor mannen. De laatste paar jaar werkt hij ook aan vrouwen items, bij de Amsterdamse couturier Ronald van der Kemp.
Die jarenlange ervaring sterkte Maikel in het idee dat het tijd werd voor een eigen label:
MB. „Ik merkte dat ik bij het ontwerpen voor grote
bedrijven na een tijd iets miste. Het bracht me weinig voldoening meer en ik zocht naar een invulling die meer bij mij als persoon past

Dat werd een modelijn speciaal voor de q***r community onder de naam Seeing Things Q***rly. „Ik ben zelf homo en wil met dit label iets teruggeven aan ’mijn’ community.”

Regenboogvlag
De regenboogvlag is al tijden hét symbool voor de homogemeenschap. De laatste jaren komen er steeds meer vlaggen bij voor de varianten in de q***r community. Maikel nam al die verschillende vlaggen als uitgangspunt.
„Voor elke genderidentiteit en seksuele geaardheid is er een aparte vlag met verschillende kleuren. Op basis van die kleuren heb ik ontwerpen gemaakt, waarbij het uitgangspunt van mijn allereerste ontwerpen het hart is.”
Het betekende een leerproces voor hem, want dat hij zelf homo is betekent niet dat hij alles weet over andere seksuele oriëntaties en gen- deridentiteiten. Hij laat een stapel boeken zien waarmee hij zijn kennis verbreedde, om op basis daarvan voor de hele LHBTQI+gemeenschap te gaan ontwerpen.
„Ik wil met Seeing Things Q***rly de heteronorm ter discussie stellen.
De standaard ís niet alleen heteroseksualiteit en alleen de twee geslachten man en vrouw, met eigen sociale rollen. Het is niet alleen zwart of wit. Er zitten grijstinten tussen en naast die tinten is er ook nog eens kleur. Er is een grote verscheidenheid aan q***r identiteiten.”

Acceptatie
Zijn opzet is om met Seeing Things Q***rly de zichtbaarheid van de LHBTQI+gemeenschap te vergroten en daardoor meer acceptatie te
creëren. ,,Er zijn nog zoveel vooroordelen. Er worden nog steeds mensen gehaat, bestraft, gediscrimineerd, bedreigd, mishandeld of zelfs vermoord vanwege hun geaardheid en hun genderidentiteit. Omdat ik voor iedereen een eigen kledingstuk creëer, creëer ik de mogelijkheid voor hen om zichzelf te uiten en trots te zijn op wie ze zijn. Ik hoop dat als mensen mijn kleding dragen de zichtbaarheid groter wordt, er gesprekken gevoerd kunnen gaan worden, er dingen gaan veranderen en de acceptatie beter wordt.’’

Hij ontwierp ook een T-shirt voor de zoals hij ze noemt – ’allies’, bondgenoten. Hetero’s die door het dragen van zijn shirts hun solidariteit tonen.

Belangrijk
Seeing Things Q***rly is voor hem
belangrijk. „Ik wil mijn ontwerptalent inzetten voor mijn gemeenschap. In de hoop dat dit uiteindelijk verandering tot stand kan brengen, iets wat erg nodig is. En misschien is het niet voor deze generatie, maar dan hopelijk voor de generaties die hierna komen.”

Momenteel is zijn kleding alleen via www.seeingthingsq***rly.com te koop, maar zijn droom is dat het op een gegeven moment gewoon in de winkel hangt. „En dan niet in een gayshop, maar in gewone kleding zaken, want q***r mensen shoppen overal.” Van elk kledingstuk dat hij verkoopt gaat tien procent van de winst naar een goed doel en van sommige ontwerpen de volledige opbrengst. „Op die manier wil ik bijdragen aan acceptatie van onze gemeenschap.” Een van die goede doelen is de Dusty Foundation in Haarlem. Deze staat onder meer slachtoffers van LHBTQI+ geweld in heel Nederland bij.

Trots
Ook hij heeft als homo het nodige meegemaakt. „Ik wilde vroeger niet opvallen, niet zichtbaar zijn. Ik ben gepest en uitgescholden en heb me eigenlijk moeten verstoppen als homo. Ik ben nu op een punt in mijn leven aangeland waarop ik denk: ’ik mag wel zichtbaar zijn en trots zijn op wie ik ben’.” Toch gaat dat nog niet vanzelf. „Als ik met mijn vriend over straat loop, lopen we niet hand in hand. Terwijl een heterokoppel dat wel zonder problemen kan doen.” Het emotioneert hem zichtbaar. „Mensen denken wel dat het allemaal oké en geaccepteerd is, maar dat is het niet. Er is nog een wereld te winnen en ik hoop dat het label Seeing Things Q***rly daar aan kan bijdragen. Dat motiveert mij om dit te doen.”

Costa Rica is the most recent country to have legalized same-sex marriage and it is the only nation in Central America to have done so. It has been legal in Costa Rica since May 26, 2020, as the result of a ruling by the Supreme Court of Justice. Same-sex marriage has advanced in countries and regions where acceptance of homosexuality is high and globally, two-thirds of countries that allow it is in Western Europe. Still, several European governments do not allow same-sex unions, notably Italy and Switzerland, according to Pew Research. South Africa remains the only country to have legalized same-sex marriage in Africa while no counties have done so in Central and Eastern Europe.

Lyssa is proudly wearing our Transgender Heart T-shirt.
Our heart is inspired by the transgender pride flag created in 1999 by Monica Helms, a transgender navy veteran, and first flown at a pride parade in Phoenix in 2000. The design and colors were carefully chosen by Helms.

Light Blue: Represents the traditional color for boys.
Light Pink: Represents the traditional color for girls.
White: Represents those who are intersex, transitioning, or see themselves as having a neutral or undefined gender.

That first flag she created now flies at the Smithsonian Natural Museum of American History. Since its debut in 2000, the trans pride flag has grown to be the prevailing symbol of the transgender community.

Candy Darling (November 24, 1944 – March 21, 1974)

Candy Darling was a fixture in the New York Off-Broadway scene in the 60s, in Warhol films such as Women in Revolt and Flesh, and became a prominent personality in Warhol's circles, influencing such noted contemporary artists as Madonna, David Bowie and Lou Reed.

A must-see is a documentary about her life 'Beautiful Darling'. It uses a series of interviews, archival footage, and images from Candy's home in Massapequa, NY.

‘All Black Lives Matter' is our declaration of affirmation for those within the Black and Brown community who are often marginalized. When we say ‘All Black Lives Matter,’ we mean Black q***r lives matter. Black le***an lives matter. Black transgender and tr*******al lives matter!
LGBTQIA+ rights are constantly attacked. Current world administrations are actively demonstrating in overturning protections for LGBTQIA+ people in the health care system and every year transgender and gender non-conforming people are being murdered, the majority being Black transgender women.

We must create a safe space for people to be themselves and put Black LGBTQIA+ liberation first. We need to be an ally, speak out and recognize that the lament for social change includes the laments of LGBTQIA+ identifying individuals.
