AMFI design alumnus Els van den Hengel created the graduation collection ‘The manual of Endurance’
‘The manual of Endurance is about an innovative, interactive, lifetime extending, by folklore inspired collection. It shows how clothing can be treated in a different way, to make it last much longer. The collection is specific inspired by the Dutch folklore of Axel. This is a village in the province of Zeeland, what is known best for their high folded shoulders. It is enhanced by an innovative and fast way of folding, by using the construction of a pop-up tent, matching with the rushed way of living that lots of people tend to live up to nowadays.’
On Wednesday the 29th of june, the Garment Magazine spent the evening at ted., where they unveiled the new Garment Magazine to the public and celebrated with everyone who helped make this happen. In this space, the team also displayed an interactive exhibition and hosted a talk with a few of this year’s collaborators on the topic of identity and the phygital future.
Topic of issue 19 “Future Through Headwear” points straight ahead towards future. This years‘ Garment Magazine by AMFI comes phygital. What does that mean? The editorial team from Issue 19 added an exclusive digital experience to the print issue. Download the “Artvive” app and scan the cover and other inside pages from the latest issue to view selected stories in Augmented Reality.

“We’ve had a wonderful time creating this year's Garment Magazine and what has made it even better has been updating you in Garment’s very first newsletter. We hope that hearing about what goes on behind the scenes of the Independent Magazine here at AMFI has sparked your interest and who knows, maybe you’ll be the next member of the Garment family. See you next year, but for now thank you and goodbye from the Garment Company team of 2022 and Issue 19.”

The Amsterdam Fashion Institute proudly presents the work of the Hypercaft course students and their take on fashion and technology. This coming from students from different dimensions all working through applied research and questioning or showcasing the current Zeitgeist.
Hypercraft being a digital focussed minor is based on encouraging digital skills, technology and creative vision that can develop a better way we product and consume fashion.
“IT’S ABOUT TIME”
Exploring the dimensions of lateral thinking, GENERATION 32 of iNDiViDUALS STUDIO takes us through their process with an interactive fashion experi
ence centred around designing for time instead of against it. Five statement looks and their digital twins embodied this principle that was expressed through durability, evolvability and adjustability of the garments. The event, which took place on June 22, was staged in an old industrial warehouse on the outskirts of Amsterdam, mirroring the central theme of their concept: the beauty of ageing.
GENERATION 32 sees the untapped beauty in the natural ageing process of garments. Unlike the fast fashion industry, they do not look at garments as disposable products but rather believe that a garment tells a story through every wrinkle, stain, and hole. That is what makes garments more valuable to them, and that is what they communicated at their event.
Attendees were invited to adjust the five statement looks worn by models standing in front of exhibition walls, depicting the process of achieving these looks. Stories, dyeing samples and trimmings were exposed. A live photoshoot took place, where the models were being photographed after guests had adjusted their outfits. One of the outfits was even ageing before the guests’ eyes, through 3D.
“We encourage the industry to rethink the value of ageing garments and we strive to curb overconsumption habits. It’s about time!”

“DESIGNING FOR TIME INSTEAD OF AGAINST IT”
iNDiViDUALS STUDIO GENERATION 32’s designs accommodate the ageing process of garments by focusing on durability, adjustability, evolvability and insights within the 3D potential.
They emphasise durability, primarily through the use of long lasting dead-stock materials that are known to age well (such as leather). This extends the garment's lifespan, lowering consumption and, as a result, production levels, which is better for the environment.
They implement adjustability in the technical side of the design. Each piece of clothing is gender neutral and does not require a certain body type. Because of the flexibility of some key elements, they may be worn in a number of ways, emphasising the fact that it is never a set product and never goes out of style or size. Creating space for our changes.
They highlight the aspect of evolvability to showcase the ageing process of the garments, how they live and develop with us. They demonstrate it mostly through the materials used for each piece of clothing, the natural dyeing techniques used, and how each garment transforms over time. 3D was used as a tool to visually illustrate a variety of aged materials and garments. Many creases and stains were experimented with to depict the ageing process as naturalistically as possible.
By affirming these three qualities, they seek to shift the perception of clothing as throwaway products and instead emphasise their value.

Miruna Vlad is part of our graduation exhibition on 1 July 2022.
'Everything was just lying around is a reflection on tradition within today's society. Our current ways of life, thought and action are largely rooted in archaic worlds, inherited mentalities, religious beliefs. With the passing of time, the origins and reason behind tradition fades away, which wraps them into the sacred aura of something that "just is", always was there and shall not be questioned. Through my project I questioned the traditional meanings of the garments we wear on a daily basis, our inherited behaviors around clothing, and our expectations from their functions. I worked with repurposed garments and footwear, found bits and pieces, my Romanian roots, written words, my personal relationship with tradition, and everything that was just lying around.’

‘Kickyland is about creating a new world. A world where people feel curious to learn more about the coherence in colours, prints and materials. This concept is all about breaking the uniformity wear and unwritten dress codes. My goal is to be a source of inspiration to people. In this world it’s all about playing with different perceptions of unpredictable patterns, colours and materials and to apply them all on a 100% basis.
I would love to welcome you all to “Kickyland”’

‘The Dichotomy of Self and Society - “Do I have to be a certain way, in order to feel valued?” A question I asked myself a lot when I was a kid. Living in different countries exposed me to various ideals. However, often times, I found myself rejecting my cultural identity in hopes to alleviate or lessen being the target of belittlement and racial comments. It is something that I find shameful doing, however this collection serves as a closure by exploring how my personal identity evolves throughout and being at peace with this journey I had. It also intends to be a commentary on how the effects of colonialism is ingrained in society and how it is felt by others.’
