”Kartano” by Esteri Tomula🤍

Made for Arabia Finland in 1973, this pattern was only in production for three years, which is part of why it’s trickier to find in good condition today compared to Tomula’s more famous florals.

What makes Kartano interesting is how different it is from her usual style. Instead of bold, you get fine vertical lines and tiny four-dot motifs, quiet, graphic, and very Scandinavian. It’s a good reminder that Tomula’s range went well beyond botanicals.

Over 50 years later, it still fits right into a modern table setting.

🔥🌲 ”Metsässä palaa” (The Forest is Burning) by Kirsti Ilvessalo, 1955

This iconic Finnish ryijy is one of the most celebrated rya rugs in Nordic textile history. Made for Suomen Käsityön Ystävät, it broke from the symmetrical patterns of traditional ryijy weaving in favor of something bolder, expressive, asymmetrical, alive with movement.

The deep reds evoke flames spreading through a forest. The organic shapes pull your eye across the surface like wind through trees. This is what Finnish modernism looked like in fiber art.

Kirsti Ilvessalo (1920–2019) designed hundreds of ryijy patterns over her career and remains one of Finland’s most influential textile artists. ”Metsässä palaa” is a masterclass in how craft can carry raw emotion.

Pentti Sarpaneva was one of the most original voices in post-war Finnish design, creating jewelry and decorative objects that blurred the line between craft, sculpture, and functional art.

Drawing inspiration from the Finnish landscape, Sarpaneva transformed the textures of tree bark, weathered wood, and delicate lace into timeless designs. His iconic Kelo jewelry series celebrates organic forms with textured bronze and amethyst, while Pitsi (”lace”) showcases intricate patterns in glass and metal. The Kaarna series, named after the Finnish word for ”tree bark,” captures the rugged beauty of nature in glassware and tableware.

Rather than following trends, Sarpaneva developed a distinctive design language rooted in Finland’s natural environment and traditional craftsmanship. His work remains an important part of Finland’s design heritage and continues to inspire collectors around the world.

Introduced in the 1960s, Kosmos is one of Arabia’s most iconic Finnish ceramic series, a collection that reflects a turning point in Nordic design history.

Designed by Ulla Procopé and Gunvor Olin-Grönqvist, Kosmos brought together timeless forms and expressive hand-painted decoration. Its flowing brown and blue brushstrokes were inspired by natural shapes, giving each piece a unique artistic character.

More than just tableware, Kosmos represented a new approach to everyday objects: functional, accessible, and yet deeply connected to craftsmanship and artistic expression.

Produced by Arabia, the series remains a beloved example of Finnish design heritage where industrial production meets the human touch of the maker.
