🚂 Exciting News for Rails Aotearoa! 🚂
After years of searching across New Zealand for the perfect tailor to recreate our classic N.Z. Railways uniforms, we’ve finally found him right here in Auckland.

Meet Vinny from Sabé by Vinny! Vinny did an absolutely fantastic job recreating the Motorman and Conductor uniforms for MOTAT, and we are thrilled to announce he will now be crafting uniforms for Rails Aotearoa. 🧵✨

What’s first on the cutting table?
We are starting with a general summer jacket for our station and train crews. All of these uniforms will be proudly remade right here in NZ, using original NZR uniforms from the 1950s as our guide. To make them truly authentic, we will be sourcing original NZR buttons wherever possible!

Vinny just received the original uniforms today to start his patterning work, and he will be getting back to us in about two weeks with the final pricing details.

What's next?

Kia ora koutou,

Recently, a few comments have popped up from individuals taking issue with the name Rails Aotearoa, insisting instead that we should be called "NZ Rail," "Rails New Zealand," or "New Zealand Railways."

Let me be very clear about who we are. Rails Aotearoa is a proudly Māori-owned business. Our core focus is to share, promote, and celebrate the rich history of New Zealand Railways, from 1880 right through to the present day.

For those genuinely upset by our name, it is worth taking a quick moment for a history lesson regarding the names of both our land and our rail network.

The names of this country have a long and rich history:

Te Ika-a-Māui: The ancient and enduring name for the North Island.

Aotearoa: A traditional name long used by Māori and now widely embraced to represent our entire country.

Niu Tireni: The transliteration of New Zealand, prominently used in our historical documents, including Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

New Zealand: Anglicised from the original Dutch Nova Zeelandia.

Similarly, our national railway network has seen its fair share of name changes since the 1880s:

New Zealand Government Railways (NZGR)
New Zealand Railways (NZR)
New Zealand Rail
Tranz Rail
Toll Rail
KiwiRail

Names evolve. However, the name of this business is Rails Aotearoa. I am not here to justify my company's name, nor will I tolerate online bullying on this page.

Consider this a fair warning: anyone bringing negativity, harassment, or bullying to the comments over the use of "Aotearoa" will be immediately banned from the page.

If you are genuinely desperate to see the "New Zealand Railways" brand back in action, you are more than welcome to go and start your own company, or you can write a letter to KiwiRail asking them for a name change.

We are here to share our railway history and heritage. To everyone else who is here to support the kaupapa and celebrate our railway heritage, thank you. Now, back to the trains.

🚂 Rails Aotearoa Hat Update
Kia ora e te whānau,

Just a quick update for everyone waiting on the new Rails Aotearoa caps. Unfortunately, we have a slight delay on the line.

The Status: The factory is currently at full capacity and backed up with other orders.
The Timeline: Our shipment has been pushed back by another two weeks.

The Good News
We are still accepting orders! We have just commissioned another 50 of each design, and they will be available for purchase as soon as the stock lands.

Special pricing is available for current rail crews, and bulk orders can be arranged for railway groups.

Railways of the Pacific Wonderland: Motive Power & Mainline Action 🚂✨

Take a deep dive into motive power and railway operations with this superb 1939 archival footage capturing our network at its absolute zenith.

Dawn at the Wellington Yards 🚂✨

A Midnight Shift on the Main Trunk (1948) 🚂✨

Take a step back to 1948 with this classic NZ National Film Unit footage following the dedicated railway crew at Taumarunui.

While the original film narrative used different names, we've had a wonderful piece of real history shared with us: the couple at the beginning of the clip are actually Fred and Hilda Smardon, and the young man rolling a smoke is their son, Ernie Smardon! 🥰

From late-night cups of tea and packed sandwiches at the kitchen table to changing engines at midnight, this clip captures the true rhythm of life on the North Island Main Trunk | Te Ara o Tūrongo.

Watch as the southbound express powers through the King Country | Te Rohe Pōtae, tackles the steep climb up the famous Raurimu Spiral, sweeps past a snow-capped Mount Ruapehu, and steams through the Waimarino into dawn. It’s a fantastic tribute to the rail crews—and families like the Smardons—who kept New Zealand moving through the night.
