Excited to post the first in a series of Cantotees Q&As, spotlighting the experiences and perspectives of the Cantonese diaspora! Thanks Jennifer Cheuk!

1. What do you do?/tell us about yourself.
My name is Jennifer Cheuk – I am a researcher, writer, curator and the publisher of indie print magazine, Rat World. I currently live in Naarm where I study a Juris Doctor at the University of Melbourne.
2. What is your ethnicity/cultural background?
I am mixed Hong Kong Chinese and Welsh – 早晨 and bore da! I grew up as tangata tiriti in Aotearoa.
3. When did your family leave China/HK/their home country? Which province/city/ town did they live?
My dad grew up in Diamond Hill (鑽石山), Hong Kong. At the time, Diamond Hill was a ‘squatter’ village and home to a lot of illegal ‘shanty town’ dwellings. Fun fact: my dad actually visited the infamous Kowloon Walled City as a teen. He came to Aoteaora when he was 21, with less than $100 in his pocket. My parents met at a lunch bar and my mum went back to Hong Kong with him!
5. How fluent are you in Cantonese? Any particular dialect? Do you speak it often?
I am part of the second-generation diaspora, born in Aotearoa. My Cantonese is rusty, but improving. My dad was really aware about my experience in a foreign, English-speaking country, and wanted me to focus on English. I was also encouraged to learn Mandarin growing up because of the economic and business opportunities. Unfortunately, this led to my Cantonese being left behind. But I understand why my parents did what they did. So, I am never upset that I was not pushed into learning Cantonese. I can always learn now!
