I am a Christchurch Mum of three who started Millie Blue in 2014 making framed paper dresses, designing clothing and stocking great on trend jewellery. One thing I've noticed is that many women shy away from colour because they're unsure what to wear it with.

The reality is that once you find colours that suit you and make you feel good, they often become some of the easiest pieces in your wardrobe to style.

Most of my wardrobe is made up of soft, neutral tones, so adding a bright colour like this sky blue instantly changes the feel of an outfit. Today I've paired it with tan, but it would work just as beautifully with denim, white, green or even another bright colour like red.

Style isn't about following colour rules. It's about finding combinations that feel like you.

One of the easiest ways to build a wardrobe that works is to choose pieces you can wear in more than one way.

These are the same black pants styled for working from home, meetings and dinner out.

Being in Sydney last week reminded me of something I've been thinking about for a while.

Watching people on the streets, there wasn't one style. There were women in leggings and sneakers, tailored suits, oversized layers, dresses, denim, scarves, jewellery and everything in between.

And it confirmed something I've been saying in my recent posts...

There isn't one "right" style.

Style starts with how you want to feel. Then it's about finding the pieces that reflect that and building your wardrobe from there.

The best-dressed women weren't all wearing the same thing.

They were wearing clothes that looked like them.

That's why I believe personal style isn't something you copy - it's something you discover.

Your summer wardrobe doesn't need to disappear when the temperature drops.

This white dress is one of my favourite summer pieces, but adding a cosy warm knit wrap completely changes how, and when, I can wear it.

Today I paired it with sneakers, but on a colder day I'd just as easily swap them for ankle boots.

The more ways you can wear the pieces you already own, the more you'll get from your wardrobe.

These tan suede ankle boots caught my eye and instantly took me back.

I remember having a pair very similar years ago, and it got me wondering how I'd style them now.

So I started looking at outfit inspiration.

I love the relaxed slouch, the soft suede and the lower heel, which makes them feel like such a wearable option. I can picture them with jeans, skirts and dresses.

I am away at a conference but managed a quick visit to Zara today.

These pants caught my eye straight away - the fabric, the colour and the stripe.

The style wasn't something I had tried before, but I decided to give them a go.

These didn't come home with me, but trying on different styles is one of the best ways to learn what works for you. Sometimes you discover a new favourite. Other times, you gain more understanding of your own style.

I rarely plan an outfit from head to toe.

Most days, it starts with one piece I feel like wearing. Then I layer from there depending on my plans for the day and how I want to feel.
