I sat down with the wonderful Rachel Klaver of The Wool Shop Rangiora today to talk about the messy, beautiful reality of designing knitting patterns. We talked about how Purl Foundry began, grading math and finding your own pattern writing style.

Just spent 4 days on the Heaphy Track. My first 4 day walk and I’m sore today but the NZ outdoors is just stunning! Native rainforests, vast tussock and incredible rock formations. So glad we got to experience it.
If you need me, I’ll be knitting on the couch for the next few days while my blisters heal 😆

Still my fave sweater this winter ❄️
Plus I’ve just loaded more cassette tape measures in new colours onto the website 🤩 I love them so much!
Behind the scenes I’ve been sending fresh pattern supplies to yarn stores and how delish is this possum yarn from Wild Earth Yarns ! It has stunning depth and softness. Can’t wait to cast it on, but first … I need to finish my current WIP.
I know many of you have multiple WIPs on the go but that stresses my brain out too much 😆 My sanity likes one project at a time. What about you?

On my table this week:
- a new pattern is coming this month! The is my favourite cardigan yet and I can’t wait to release it into the world 🎉
- working on the next pattern which is currently scribbles, froggings and dreams but I made good progress yesterday ✨
- these new Thank You cards arrived a few days ago to post with physical orders 🙌 I love to scrawl a hand written note with each parcel and now I’ve got this beautiful stationery to do that on 😻
Now I have weekend plans to snuggle under a blanket with my knitting for a few hours with the fire going and a hot coffee on hand. Let’s see how long I can fend off interruptions 🤞

Had the best time in Christchurch last weekend for Woolfeast 🎉 I always love meeting you all and chatting all-things-knitting.
Also popped into the Wild Earth Yarns store. It’s so good to see the colours and squish the yarn in person … the stash got a good little boost after that 🧶
And Yarnfloozy: catrien kilpatrick wore her (coming in July) which was such a treat! It’s not often I get to see a test knit in real life.
Thanks for a great weekend, Chch! Looking forward to doing it all again next year.

A couple of new items added to the store this week 🤩

These cassette tape measures are my latest obsession! I’m so smitten and they feel like my 80s childhood 😻 They make me so happy. https://www.purlfoundry.com/product/cassette-tape-measure

Also added are these stone stitch markers. They come in sets of five and in two colourways: light or dark. They feel earthy, grounded and just the right size for your needles. https://www.purlfoundry.com/product/stone-removable-markers

I’ll have them all at WoolFeast Christchurch Chch this weekend but they’re also on the website if you can’t make it there.

Happy knitting!

Had a nice time popping by Good Yarn last week. The vibes are so warm and friendly and they’re so supportive of NZ made yarn & patterns 🥰
Feeling lots of love from the Ridgeline Sweater projects too. I’m really enjoying seeing your WIPs pop up and to hear that you’re enjoying the pattern as much as I do 🤩
Also prepping for WoolFeast Christchurch this weekend … my last market of the year which is a little sad. But I’ve got lots of goodies for you all so if you’re in Chch, make sure you pop by and say hi 👋

The Ridgeline Sweater pattern is out now and I love these sleeves so much 🤩

No sleeve seam and the saddle shoulders continue down to the cuff but it’s all worked at the same time as the yoke. It’s such a fun knit!

If you want to knit an 8ply (DK) pattern, you can often achieve the same gauge as the pattern by using 4ply yarn held double with laceweight mohair.
https://www.purlfoundry.com/article/holding-yarn-double-isnt-actually-more-expensive

I sometimes hear knitters avoiding this because it costs more but here’s the thing … holding yarn double with mohair (or other fibres of choice) doesn’t necessarily mean double the price tag. You aren’t buying double the balls of yarn!

Here’s the breakdown:
A standard 50g ball of 8ply = approx 100m.
But 50g of 4ply = approx 200m.
Because 4ply is thinner, it goes twice as far!

So if your pattern asks for 1,00 of yarn, that’s 10 balls of 8ply (DK) OR 5 balls of 4ply (Fi*****ng).

Your base yarn cost is now cut in half! So you can take those savings and use it to buy your fluffy second yarn 💪 Depending on your mohair price, you could end up paying the same as you would have when using straight 8ply.

The result is a fabric that has more drape, softness and texture.

Have you been dodging patterns that use yarn held double because of the price tag? Let me know if this changes your mind 🤔
