Garment Study 03: Sleeping with my Misery top

Inspired by the long-sleeve garment developed for my graduate collection, Artefacts of the Feminine Ego, the Sleeping with my Misery top was created to be a versatile version that could be worn on its own or layered with other garments. After many iterations, the silhouette emerged with an exaggerated cowl neckline, added volume, and a waist tie to create the dream silk chiffon top. Crafted from four metres of deadstock yoryu silk and cut on the bias, this piece moves fluidly with the body.

Drawing from corsetry construction, strips of silk cover externally sewn seams, subtly referencing boning channels while strengthening the delicate chiffon and eliminating internal seams. This labour intensive technique appears throughout every silk piece in Unearthed, allowing elements of corsetry to be present even in softer pieces.

Garment Study 02: Bound by Suffering Corset

When designing Unearthed, I wanted to revisit and elevate the corset I created for my graduate collection, Artefacts of the Feminine Ego. The introduction of structured cups, removable straps, and cotton canvas led to the birth of the Bound by Suffering Corset.

This corset embodies the suffocating feeling of confinement created by the feminine psyche; being bound by one’s own suffering. By drawing on the traditional corset’s history of restriction and conventional beauty, and infusing it with the emotional language of Bodies of Solace, a piece that feels raw, historic, and disturbed was born.

Garment Study 01: It’s Easy to Get Lost Here Pants

These pants are the most labour-intensive piece from Unearthed. Featuring over 300 hand-set eyelets and 50 metres of pure cotton lacing, they embody the level of intentional craftsmanship and detail central to Bodies of Solace.

When designing the collection, I wanted to combine a 90s-inspired silhouette with the hallmarks of Bodies of Solace to create an adjustable fitting pant. Frayed twill tape encloses the seams of the pants, while Japanese eco-dye creates a surface that appears lived-in, worn, and melancholic. Silk has been intricately layered beneath sections of the twill tape to introduce further dimension and texture throughout the garment.
