Check out this excellent and very thorough guide to shopping traditional textiles in Cusco, Peru!

Sourcing genuine, handmade products is extremely important - but often extremely difficult. To the untrained eye, non-authentic or synthetic, machine-made textiles can be hard to tell apart from natural, handwoven items.

This guide - produced with support from our friends at Mosqoy and by National Geographic - is essential reading for anyone who cares about supporting handcraft, traditional culture, Indigenous women, and natural, eco-friendly products.

Supporting ethical and sustainable fashion allows the wisdom of ancient traditions to be passed to future generations. 🌱

Before the Industrial Era, most indigenous weavers would have been well-aware of the natural processes and materials for dyeing. They were truly connected to the Earth, understood the spirit of the plants that they were working with, and knew that each plant had many uses.

However, a boom in mass production and popularity of convenient synthetics nearly resulted in a complete erasure of these skills from indigenous culture, and a whole generation came to lack this knowledge. We became disconnected from our relationship to the Earth and each other, which in turn caused mass production to lead to destruction of nature, use toxic chemicals in fabrics, and the quality of life and materials dropped. Thankfully, a recent resurgence of interest in the old ways – thanks in part to the demand for natural, handmade products – led to consultation with the elders who still remembered the processes, and the traditions have been rescued. 🙏

We've rediscovered that our mindset around production is very impoetant for the wellbeing of the Earth & human beings. Using non-synthetic dyes and fabrics is one aspect of a larger list of ethics that we abide by at Threads of Peru. Supporting indigenous practices and wisdom is crucial to the preservation of earth.

Ch'illca is one of the most common plants to use when dying fabric green. During the dyeing process, our weavers Big add the leaves of the ch'illca plant to the dye pot, mixed with collpa, a mineral compound found in the jungle. This boils for about an hour before yarn is added and steeped further.

You can learn more about our dyeing process and what plants our weavers enjoy working with the most on our newly renovated website! (link in bio)

Threads of Peru works with weavers who are predominantly women.

International development studies show that when women receive their own income, the health and well-being of their children improves at a much faster rate than when men have sole control of the family’s income. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧
