“Why Kumon? Can’t you just teach her yourself? She’ll read when she’s ready!” 🙄
If you’ve ever sent your child to Kumon, you’ve probably heard some variation of this. Or maybe you've heard the whispers that it’s "just boring, repetitive worksheets" and "they don't even actually teach."
There’s a common misconception that sending your child to a learning center is either the "easy way out" or a repetitive chore. But let’s set the record straight on what this journey actually looks like for us:
🌱 It is NOT a hands-off shortcut. Anyone who knows Kumon knows it requires massive commitment from parents. Those daily worksheets don’t complete themselves! It takes time, energy, and relentless consistency at home to make this routine work. It is a daily partnership, not a babysitting service.
🌱 I am her parent, a VA by profession actually, not a trained educator. Knowing how to read is one thing; knowing how to teach a child to read step-by-step is an entirely different skill set. Having a structured, guided, and proven system takes the guesswork out of it and ensures she’s building the right foundation from the start.
🌱 The "repetition" is actually building a superpower. People often critique Kumon as just "drill-and-kill" repetition. But that repetition is what builds fluency, confidence, and focus. Just like practicing scales on a piano, she is mastering the basics so that when things get harder, she won't get frustrated.
🌱 It’s teaching her how to learn independently. Critics sometimes say, "The instructors don't even teach lessons at a board!" But that is entirely by design. The program is structured so she can look at examples and figure things out on her own. She’s learning self-reliance and problem-solving, skills that go way beyond just reading.
🌱 She genuinely LOVES it. This is the biggest one for us. We aren't forcing this on her, she absolutely loves going to the center, earning her milestones, and seeing what she can achieve. As parents, why wouldn’t we support something that fuels her own excitement to learn?
Parenting isn't one-size-fits-all. We aren't outsourcing our parenting; we are investing our time, building great habits, and most importantly, supporting our girl's love for learning. Thank you Kumon Insular Square Mandaue for this little big milestone for Daphne 🩷 Way to go bunny! 😁
