The tough, olive drab-hued M1956 canvas load carrying equipment system replaced the M1910, M1923 and M1945 systems and was issued to US Army units in the early 1960s.
Lighter materials like nylon helped the M1956 system evolve into the M1967 system, parts of which were used all the way until the 1990s. Here's your handy gear guide:
