When you come up to me and say I love you,
my response will always be, "I love you more."
Because I’ll always love you more.
And I was warned I was going to fall in love with you,
but I didn’t realize how deep.
It’s a love at first kick, heartbeat, and sight kind of love.
It’s a feeling of tiger-like fierceness that comes out when you get picked on or hurt,
It’s a melty feeling I get when you say, “I love you,”
it’s grace and forgiveness when you’re testing me by stomping away and a slam of the door,
because I love you more.
And when you do something I’m proud of—something kind or impressive you worked so hard to achieve—I feel a bubble of pride in my chest, more prideful than if I’d done it myself,
because I love you more.
I love the feeling of you draping yourself on me,
of you kissing the back of my head,
when we’re doing anything together with you smiling,
because I love you more.
I’m my best self, simply when I’m near you,
because I want to be the best mom and role model for you,
because I love you more.
Even when you grow older and don’t hug me at every opportunity
because you’re embarrassed.
I’ll accept that phase,
because I love you more.
And when that needy, clingy love is replaced by the love you have for me as a person, not a caregiver. When you become more independent and need my support more and my presence less,
I’ll always be there.
No matter how old you are.
Because I love you more.
