Sewing Guide: How to Cut and Stitch this Outfit
This guide breaks down the pattern into simple, actionable steps for a beginner tailor. Follow these stages in order to successfully recreate the relaxed-fit embroidered kameez and wide-leg trousers.
------------------------------
# # ๐ฆ Stage 1: Preparation & Fabric Management
Before cutting, prepare your fabric to avoid shrinking and warping later.
* Pre-shrink the Fabric: Soak lawn/cotton fabric in water for 30 minutes, line dry, and iron flat before cutting.
* Identify the Grainline: Ensure all pieces are cut parallel to the selvage (finished factory edge) so the garment hangs straight.
* Isolate Embroidered Panels: Cut out the pre-embroidered neck and hem sections carefully, ensuring the embroidery lines sit perfectly centered on your fold line.
------------------------------
# # โ๏ธ Stage 2: Step-by-Step Cutting Instructions # # 1. Cutting the Kameez (Main Body)
1. Fold Fabric: Fold your fabric lengthways into 4 layers. The width of this folded block must be at least 13.5 inches (11.5" Hip + 2" Seam Allowance).
2. Mark Vertical Heights: Measuring down from the top edge, mark points at 8" (Chest), 14" (Waist), 21" (Hip), and 42" (Full Length).
3. Mark Horizontal Widths:
* Top edge: 7.5" for shoulder. Drop the outer edge by 0.5" for a shoulder slope.
* Chest line: 11"
* Waist line: 10"
* Hip line: 11.5"
4. Connect the Dots: Draw a smooth curve connecting the shoulder slope to the chest line (Armhole). Draw a gradual line from chest to waist, then out to the hip. From the hip, draw a straight line down to the bottom hem (13" width).
5. Add Seam Margin: Draw a second line 1.5 to 2 inches outside your main shape. Cut only along this outer line.
# # 2. Cutting the Sleeves
1. Fold fabric into 4 layers, measuring 22" long by 9" wide.
2. On one open corner, measure down 3.5" and draw a diagonal S-curve up to the fold to create the armhole cap.
3. At the wrist end, mark 8" for the wide opening. Cut a straight line connecting the armhole curve to the wrist.
# # 3. Cutting the Trousers
1. Fold your fabric into 2 layers (for front) and then another 2 layers (for back).
2. Mark a 12" width at the top. Measure down 15.5" for the crotch line.
3. Extend the crotch line outward by 2" and draw a curved hook shape.
4. At the bottom ankle line, mark 11" wide. Connect the crotch curve down to the ankle line.
------------------------------
# # ๐ชก Stage 3: Step-by-Step Stitching Sequence # # Step 1: Interface and Finish Neckline
* Iron a piece of lightweight fusible interfacing onto the backside of the embroidered neckline to stabilize the fabric.
* Stitch a bias tape facing around the neck curve, flip it to the inside, and press flat to create a clean, professional edge.
# # Step 2: Join Shoulders
* Place the front and back kameez pieces right-sides together.
* Sew across the top shoulder lines using a standard 0.5-inch seam allowance. Overcast or zigzag finish the raw edges.
# # Step 3: Attach the Sleeves (Flat Method)
* Spread the joined kameez flat on your table.
* Align the center notch of the sleeve cap to the shoulder seam line. Stitch the curve down from the center out to each side.
# # Step 4: Close the Side Seams
* Fold the kameez right sides together. Stitch from the wrist opening, down the armpit, through the waist, and stop exactly at the 21-inch hip mark.
* Backstitch securely at the hip mark to lock the side slits (chaaks).
# # Step 5: Hem the Bottom and Slits
* Fold the raw edges of the side slits inside by 0.5 inches twice, press with an iron, and topstitch up and down the slits.
* Fold and stitch the bottom hem, or carefully attach the embroidered border piece using an appliquรฉ stitch.
# # Step 6: Assemble Trousers
* Stitch the front crotch curve together, and the back crotch curve together.
* Open the pants up and align the inner leg seams. Stitch from one ankle cuff, up through the crotch, and down to the other ankle cuff.
* Fold the top waist edge down by 2 inches to create a channel, insert 1-inch wide elastic, and secure the waistband loop. Hem the bottom ankle cuffs.
