🌍 CIMODE 2026: The end of a congress, the beginning of new futures

The 8th International Fashion and Design Congress (CIMODE 2026) has come to an end, but the futures we began weaving together are only just beginning to unfold.

Held for the first time in Brazil, in conjunction with the Colóquio de Moda, one of the country‘s leading events in the field, this edition marked an important milestone in CIMODE‘s history, strengthening international collaboration, academic cooperation and dialogue between research communities.

🧵Under the theme “Weaving Futures”, researchers, academics and professionals came together to explore how Fashion and Design can drive transformation, address today‘s challenges and inspire new possibilities for tomorrow.

At 2C2T, we are proud to have contributed to this international meeting, fostering connections and helping weave new paths for research, creativity and innovation in Fashion and Design.

📚 New 2C2T Publication | Exploring AI in the fashion design process

How can Generative AI support creativity in the early stages of fashion design?

A new book chapter by Diana Santiago, Sofia Moreira, António Dinis Marques, André Catarino, Isabel Cabral, and Joana Cunha, published by Springer, explores how AI-generated imagery can support mood board creation and visual concept development.

💡 The researchers compared 12 text-to-image tools, examining how differently they interpreted the same creative prompt and assessing their ability to generate relevant visual content. The study then explored a hybrid human-AI creative workflow, showing how AI-generated imagery can stimulate conceptual thinking and contribute to the development of designer-created mood boards.

Rather than replacing human creativity, the work highlights the potential of AI as a co-creative tool, opening new possibilities for experimentation, visual exploration, and communication within the fashion design process.

🎉 Rosa Vasconcelos elected President of the IEEE Education Society - EdSoc
IEEE.EdSoc!

Professor Rosa Vasconcelos, a lecturer at the Universidade do Minho Departamento de Engenharia Têxtil and a researcher at 2C2T - Centre for Textile Science and Technology, will become the first Portuguese person to lead this leading international society dedicated to engineering and technology education.

Having served on its Board since 2015 and as Vice-President since 2022, she will be President-Elect for the 2027-2028 term, before taking office as President for 2029-2030.

This election recognises her outstanding career spanning more than four decades in higher education, pedagogical innovation and international cooperation, and is a source of pride for the University of Minho and 2C2T.

🎓 Spotlight on Diana Santiago – creating children’s clothing with natural dyes that care for and protect the skin.

💡 What if the clothes children wear could help protect their skin?

In this edition, Diana shares how her PhD research explores children’s clothing made with natural, plant-based dyes that offer biofunctional properties. Using plants such as indigo, madder, and weld, this work looks at how natural dyes can provide colour while also offering antibacterial, antioxidant, and UV-protective benefits.

By combining health, sustainability, and design, Diana’s research aims to create non-toxic, protective, and visually appealing clothing that supports children’s well-being.

🌍 CIMODE 2026: Weaving Futures in Fashion and Design

The 8th International Fashion and Design Congress (CIMODE 2026) will take place from 21 - 23 October 2026 in Florianópolis, Brazil, in a hybrid format, under the theme “Weaving Futures”.

This year, CIMODE will be held in conjunction with the 21st Fashion Colloquium, bringing together researchers, academics, designers and professionals from around the world to share knowledge, discuss emerging perspectives and explore the future of Fashion and Design.

The event is jointly organised by CEART – UDESC, ABEPEM and Colóquio de Moda, together with the Department of Textile Engineering Department (DET) and the Centre for Textile Science and Technology (2C2T) of the University of Minho, reinforcing international collaboration and the exchange of knowledge across the Fashion and Design research community.

With more than 250 researchers and professionals expected to participate, CIMODE 2026 will provide an international platform for scientific discussion, networking and the dissemination of new research and innovative approaches in Fashion and Design.

🏆 Textile Engineering Student Wins the UMinho Scientific Research Initiation Award 2026!

We are delighted to announce that Maria João Faria Quintas, currently a third-year Textile Engineering student at the University of Minho, has been awarded the UMinho Scientific Research Initiation Award 2026!

The award ceremony took place on 9 October 2026, at the Gualtar Campus in Braga, as part of an annual University of Minho initiative that encourages undergraduate students to take their first steps in scientific research, working alongside experienced researchers.

🔬 Maria João carried out her research project, “Multifunctional Elastic Band for the Relief of Dysmenorrhoea”, at 2C2T and DET, under the supervision of Dr. Jorge Padrão, Dr. André Catarino, MSc Cátia Alves and MSc Beatriz Caseiro. The project focused on developing a multifunctional elastic band designed to help alleviate menstrual pain, exploring the potential of textile-based solutions to improve women‘s comfort and well-being.

The event also featured the participation of Dr. Ana Isabel Ribeiro, from 2C2T, as a member of the evaluation committee.

We are proud to announce that Andrea Zille, Helena Felgueiras, and Raúl Fangueiro have once again been recognized among the World’s Top 2% Scientists, according to the 2026 update of the Stanford University/Elsevier ranking.

🔬 This prestigious recognition highlights the international impact of scientific research, considering both career-long contributions and citation performance during 2025.

In this year's edition, 67 researchers affiliated with the University of Minho are included in the single-year impact ranking, while 42 appear in the career-long ranking. All three 2C2T researchers are featured in both classifications!

🎨 2C2T - Centre for Textile Science and Technology at the 5th Brazilian Color Conference

On September 18-19, 2026, Prof. Cristina Broega and Dr. Isabel Cabral represented 2C2T at the 5th Brazilian Color Conference, held in Porto, Portugal.

The conference brought together researchers, designers, and professionals to explore color from multiple scientific, technological, and creative perspectives, providing a multidisciplinary forum for discussion and knowledge exchange.

The presence of 2C2T at the event reflects the Center’s commitment to engaging with the wider scientific and creative communities and to strengthening connections across research areas where color, textiles, materials, and design intersect.

We are proud to share a new research article by Fernanda Enéia Schulz, João Pedro Teixeira, Dr. António Dinis Marques, Dr. Isabel Cabral, and Dr. Joana Cunha, published in Education Sciences (MDPI).

📖 Designing for Circularity: A Gamified Deck of Cards for Sustainability Education in the Textile and Fashion Industry
The article presents the development and evaluation of the “Circularity Deck of Cards”, a gamified educational resource designed to support the teaching and practical application of circular design principles in the textile and clothing industry.

Developed within the European-funded Be@t – Bioeconomy in the Textile Industry project, the resource combines a set of cards, a circular board, and a trainer’s guide to promote creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration.

The study highlights the potential of gamified and active learning to connect theoretical knowledge with practical challenges in textile and fashion design, supporting the development of skills needed for the transition towards more circular and sustainable practices.
This work also demonstrates the value of interdisciplinary collaboration across education, design, textile engineering, sustainability, and industry in developing new approaches to sustainability education and lifelong learning.
