Tuberculosis (TB) is a bacterial infection that can spread through the inhalation of tiny droplets from an infected person's sneeze or cough. The pathogenic bacteria that causes tuberculosis comes from the Mycobacteriaceae family, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, also known as Koch's bacillus. Despite the fact that tuberculosis bacteria are most commonly associated with the lungs, they can infect any part of the body. As a result, when TB bacteria are inhaled, they can settle in the lungs and begin to growβmaking their way through the bloodstream, eventually spreading to other organs such as the kidney, spine, brain, and other body organs.
Contrary to peopleβs misconceptions, it is regarded that not everyone who contracts TB becomes ill with the disease. In fact, Tuberculosis is classified into two types: Latent TB Infection (LTBI) and TB disease. By this means, bacteria from tuberculosis can reside in the body without causing illness. This is known as Latent Tuberculosis Infection whereas most persons who become infected by TB are able to resist the bacteria and stop them from developing.
However, if the immune system is unable to inhibit the growth of TB bacteria, they can become active. In certain individuals, particularly those with a weakened immune system, the bacteria can become active, grow, and develop into Tuberculosis (TB) disease. The symptoms of Tuberculosis include persistent cough that lasts three weeks or longer, chest pain, and coughing up blood, mucus, or phlegm from deep within the lungs. As such, if an individual with tuberculosis does not receive proper treatment, it could lead to fatal complications such as death.
