Lion's Gate Blah
It’s that time of year again: the annual reminder that the “Lion’s Gate Portal” is not an ancient tradition.
There is no historical evidence that the ancient Egyptians observed an 8/8 “portal”, called anything the Lion’s Gate, or attached this particular spiritual significance to the date. The concept, as it circulates today, is a modern New Age construction that emerged in the late 20th century.
Sirius *was* enormously important in ancient Egypt. Its heliacal rising was associated with the coming inundation of the Nile and played an important calendrical and religious role.
But that does not make the Lion’s Gate Portal ancient Egyptian.
For one thing, the heliacal rising of Sirius is an astronomical event, not a fixed Gregorian calendar date. When Sirius first becomes visible before sunrise depends on your latitude, local horizon, atmospheric conditions, and the time you are observing it in. It does not simply “rise on 8/8” everywhere on Earth.
Then there is the numerology around 8/8, Leo season, Sirius, Orion, pyramids, “DNA activation”, manifestation frequencies and whatever else gets added to the story each year. These are largely modern ideas assembled from several unrelated systems and presented with an Egyptian aesthetic to make them sound older and more authoritative/authentic than they are.
None of this means you cannot decide that 8 August is personally meaningful, meditate, set intentions, perform ritual, or invent a modern spiritual observance around it.
But there is a difference between creating a modern spiritual practice and claiming that it comes from ancient Egypt or some other civilisation.
Again, just because this was created recently does not necessarily mean it can't be personally useful and significant.
HOWEVER, passing it off as ancient history is just intellectually dishonest.
