exhibition space, the store’s bespoke retail environment and merchandise displays utilizes nooks, crannies, cages and floating fixtures to evoke a sense of discovery and informality. The overall aesthetic places emphasis on warm, authentic materials and maintains their natural essence – an homage to traditional Thai craftsmanship within a modern-day marketplace that acutely anticipates the ever-changing contemporary consumer lifestyle.

Across 336 pages and 300+ photographs, photographer and cultural historian Katsumasa Kusunose (ジャズ喫茶案内＊Jazz Kissa) takes us deep inside the legendary Hi-Fi systems that define these spaces, as well as the people that have shaped the sound of generations.⁠

⁠An immersive photographic journey through the lens of Katsumasa Kusunose () into the soul of Japanese listening culture.⁠

For nearly a century, Japan’s Jazz Kissa cafés have offered something rare: sanctuaries where music is not just heard, but felt. In our latest book, photographer and cultural historian Katsumasa Kusunose documents these intimate spaces across 15 years of dedicated work, preserving their atmosphere for future generations.⁠

Accompanied by a foreword by Devon Turnbull () that connects these historic cafés with today’s global resurgence of high-fidelity audio.⁠

Presented as a large-format, hardcover-bound volume printed on specially sourced Japanese paper and wrapped in a traditional OBI strip, Jazz Kissa is both cultural document and collector’s object. With more than 300 photographs across 336 pages, this book is a testament to a culture where sound remains sacred.⁠

Katsumasa Kusunose I

Katsumasa Kusunose is a photographer, publisher, and the visionary behind JAZZ CITY, renowned for documenting Japan's iconic jazz kissa, intimate listening cafés dedicated to high-fidelity sound. Through his acclaimed Jazz Kissa photobooks and Gateway to Jazz Kissa magazine, he has played a pivotal role in preserving and sharing this unique listening culture with audiences around the world.

Drawing on more than 15 years of research and photography, Kusunose-san captures the atmospheric beauty, rich history, and devoted communities that define each café, tracing the evolution of jazz kissa from humble musical libraries to globally celebrated sanctuaries of sound.

Devon Ojas I

Devon is known under his creative pseudonym Ojas, a Sanskrit term that loosely translates to ‘life vitality’. Ojas audio systems are the result of two decades of experimentation, engineering and exploration in the audio underground.

With a particular interest in high efficiency speakers and low powered tube amplifiers, the intention is to bring realistic, natural sound to the listener. Turnbull’s audio work and sound experiences are exhibited in leading fine art galleries and museums around the world, as well as select hospitality venues and private collections. Through all these collaborations, Turnbull’s devotion to utter sonic purity remains unparalleled.
