This week, I was inspired by Buy Now! The Shopping Conspiracy, a documentary uncovering the impact of overconsumption on our planet.

It’s a reminder of why we do what we do at Collect.it by Maris—turning plastic waste into meaningful souvenirs while raising awareness about plastic overconsumption. Each of our handcrafted cat magnets is made from ocean plastic collected on Koh Samui, reducing waste while creating something special.

By rethinking our choices, we can reduce our reliance on plastic, consume less, and inspire others to do the same. Change starts with small steps—and every step counts.

1st GOAL is to recycle 500 kg of plastic—the equivalent of 250,000 bottle caps! If just 1.7% of the annual visitors to Koh Samui purchase our recycled souvenirs.

we’ll hit this milestone and move closer to our larger goal of recycling 2,025 kg of plastic—the equivalent of 1,012,500 bottle caps! That means if just 7% of visitors to Samui buy our eco-friendly souvenirs, we’ll achieve this!

Beach clean-ups have been proven to rapidly reduce plastic pollution. Norce, a Norwegian research organization, found that removing litter from an island near Bergen reduced microplastics by 99.5% in just a year! This research shows the power of clean-ups to create real environmental impact. 🌱

Plastics are polluting our planet, choking our oceans, and harming both human health and vital ecosystems. More than 430 million tons of plastic are produced each year, with two-thirds becoming waste after just one use. Eleven million metric tons of plastics enter our oceans annually, and if trends continue, plastic waste will triple by 2060, with devastating consequences.

At Collect.IT by Maris, we’re committed to raising awareness and reducing single-use plastic. Our mission is to turn ocean plastic into beautiful art while advocating for change.

This piece, made from melted bottle caps, is a testament to what can be achieved through local recycling efforts. Remember, 1 kg of recycled plastic equals 1400 bottle caps!

The UN Environment Programme is determined to help the world avert such a catastrophic future by mapping out a plan to reduce global plastic waste by 80% within two decades.
Here are five reasons why the world needs to beat plastic pollution — and how everyone can step up to protect our planet for generations to come:

1.Plastic is Everywhere: From the Philippines to the Arctic, plastic is found in every corner of the planet. It doesn't biodegrade; it just breaks down into smaller pieces, becoming micro- or nanoplastics.

2.Plastics Harm Our Health and Ecosystems: Microplastics pose a significant threat to human health and vital ecosystems. They infiltrate everything, from our clothing to the depths of the ocean, and can be cancerous.
