Customised Order: Pope Leo XIV
The first challenge of 2026!
Back in January, while joining the pop-up market at the Central Market, an elderly foreign lady came up and asked if I could crochet a doll for her. After hearing her story, my heart melted—so I set aside my current projects and rushed to finish it before they left Hong Kong.
She and her husband had lived in Hong Kong for 10 years. They later moved back to Germany to care for her elderly mother, but they truly love Hong Kong—the people, the food, the culture. So they return every two years to stay for one to three months.
She wanted a crochet doll as a souvenir of this trip—and also as her birthday gift.
We didn't just message back and forth; she and her husband also came to my market booth, introduced my work, discussed the doll’s detail together, and shared their stories with me.
In the end, everyone was absolutely thrilled with the finished piece! Seeing the joy on their faces when they received the doll filled my heart with happiness.
Second year in a row that Germany finds me at Central Market. What a beautiful connection.
This time, the challenge was a crochet figure of Pope Leo XIV. I referenced online patterns, but also drew inspiration from an AI‑generated image to shape the final look.
We kept messaging—brainstorming together, comparing which versions they liked best. Eventually, we settled on a size as small as an iPhone. The hardest part? The head shape. The first vision followed an online pattern, but it didn't match in my mind. So I unraveled it and started over. The second vision was perfect—and it closely matched the AI reference.
Since AI imagery came along, it's undeniably become a great tool for design inspiration. But when it comes to actual crochet, you still have to rely on your own hands and imagination—there's no way to copy AI exactly.
