Our pace quickened from Mam Barrisdale, downhill now all the way to glittering Inverie Bay. A resident, tinkering with a boat in his driveway, regarded us with kindly concern as we plodded past on our approach to the village. We carried about us the essence of the bog, smeared in mud and smelling for all the world like a badger had died in one of our bags.

As tempting as it was to sleep under the stars, the weather soon turned and reminded me that I was positively in Scotland in October. I left the solitude of the beach for my sheltered tent on other side of the island, from where I rustled up a portable stove-cooked chilli dinner and fell asleep to the sound of squawking birds, chattering ducks and – yes – frolicking wallabies.

That has led to a rise in sediments, pesticides and fertilisers making their way into the water during the rainy season. High levels of nitrogen and ammonium are being recorded in the lagoon, especially near the town. The makeup of the water is changing – and algae and molluscs are multiplying at a rapid rate. So far, no research has demonstrated that microbialite communities can recover from environmental damage in the short term.

In 1975 near Moca, Puerto Rico, a bloodsucking, bat-like humanoid reportedly killed livestock. A new vampire cryptid called the Gargoyle emerged in 2018 near Barceloneta. This two-legged, winged predator smelled of sulfur like its predecessor, the chupacabra.

The story of West Virginia's past often goes something like this: in the late 1800s, blue-collar workers came from Wales, Eastern Europe and other far-flung corners of the world to mine coal that ultimately built the cities that fired America to global superpower status. But that story leaves out an important element: the vibrant and sometimes tragic experiences of the region's African American communities, which were integral to the industry and to a burgeoning Appalachian culture.
