It may appear to be an unfeeling shield of bone, but the shell of the Hawaiian green sea turtle is covered in living skin and needs to be looked after. Many types of fish, such as the striking yellow tang fish, line up to clean algae from their shells, acting like a sort of ‘fish car wash’. The turtles even adopt a specific, ‘standing on tiptoe’ posture, so every inch of them can be dealt with.

In 2009, researchers discovered gloomy octopuses (Octopus tetricus) living in close proximity at a site in Jervis Bay, Australia - dubbed 'Octlantis'. Mating and fighting were observed among a group that numbered between two and 11. It was thought that a scrap of metal or man-made object may have provided the first bit of shelter around which the animals could congregate.

Visiting such celebrated sites as the pub and the prince’s beach is easier now that there's road access to Eriskay. The formation of the pony society occurred at a time of increasing cultural awareness and confidence in Scotland. The Scottish National Party (SNP) gained its first MP in 1967, and the ponies may have been a beneficiary of the more assured national mood. In his research into the pony society's formation, Liam Crouse, PhD researcher at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig UHI college, learned that its early membership "included some notable SNP members, as well as some of the Gaelic intelligentsia at a national level". He said he's "trying to piece together the impetuses of the instigation of the society in 1972, but I think it is a combination of an increasingly confident Scottish cultural society and the realisation in Eriskay that these ponies were both unique and rare."

Most of the Bedouin tribes in the area still depend on the Nabataean paths. Umm Khaled, who belongs to the Ammarin tribe, told me how difficult it was to make ends meet when the roads were emptied of visitors during the pandemic, and how her family is still struggling. Lama and I often argued during my week-long stay in the Himalayan Kingdom. One of our first arguments, in fact, was over Lama’s belief that Indian girls are not good hikers. I proved him wrong, trekking to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery with considerable ease the previous day. Located in the middle of Jasper National Park, the alpine town of just 4,200 residents is a major junction on some of Canada's greatest railway routes. In the 1870s, the British began to expand the railway from Peradeniya, a railway junction near Kandy, extending the route to the terminal station Badulla in 1924. This 178km-long stretch involved navigating through rainy, forested mountains, steep ridges and a series of sharp twists and turns by building an impressive mix of bridges, viaducts, tunnels and embankments. If I'd steered hard around the hairpin bend, I'd have driven straight into a frightening gradient of crumbling road, rearing up like a tidal wave in front of me. Rainwater poured down the middle of the rough carriageway like a mountain stream. I reached to change gear and realised I was already in first.
