💔 Some rescue stories break your heart. Rory's is one of them. 💔
Rory came to Reborn Rescue in heartbreaking condition. She was severely underweight, dehydrated, incredibly shy, and timid. She had been wearing a harness so tightly, for so long, that the hair underneath it was completely gone.
We knew this girl had been through so much. What we didn't know was just how close she was to losing her life. After finally feeling safe enough to curl up in someone's lap, Rory began to relax. For what may have been the first time in a very long time, she felt safe. But as her body relaxed, something happened. She passed abnormal discharge from her reproductive tract, and we immediately knew something wasn't right.
We contacted our veterinarian, Dr. Jordan Guy, right away. Our worst fear was confirmed. PYOMETRA. 💔
Pyometra is a life-threatening infection of the uterus that can develop in unspayed female dogs. The uterus fills with infected material, and without immediate treatment, the infection can lead to sepsis, organ failure, and death.
Rory needed an emergency spay to save her life. With a dog already in such poor physical condition, surgery carries serious risks. We didn't know if her little body would be strong enough to survive. But Rory wasn't ready to give up.

Thanks to Dr. Jordan Guy, who performed this lifesaving procedure, Rory has been given another chance. And please, let Rory's story be a reminder: SPAY YOUR FEMALES! Pyometra is preventable, and no dog should have to suffer through this.
Unfortunately, Rory's fight is far from over. Further testing revealed that Rory is also positive for Ehrlichia, a tick-borne infection. This may help explain her extreme weight loss, pale gums indicating possible anemia, and limping in her back legs.
We are concerned that this infection may have been present for a long time. Rory has started antibiotics, but we still need additional bloodwork, a urinalysis, and further testing to understand just how much damage her body has endured. Rory is not out of the woods yet.

And that doesn't include any additional treatment Rory may need as she continues to recover. Some of you may remember Rory's story. She had been placed on another shelter's waiting list and was expected to be taken into their care. The shelter ultimately declined to take Rory. This was especially disheartening knowing that the shelter has access to funding and resources to handle medical emergencies like the one Rory is now facing.
Unfortunately, Reborn Rescue does not have those same financial resources.
❤️ But what we DO have is an incredible community of supporters who have shown up time and time again when an animal desperately needed help. ❤️
Rory may be over our rescue's weight limit, and her medical expenses are beyond what we were prepared for, but turning her away was never an option. She was fighting for her life, and we couldn't let her face that fight alone. Her life mattered more than our weight limit.
Right now, Rory remains in the care of our CEO, where she will continue to receive the love, attention, and medical care she desperately needs. She isn't ready for our foster to adopt program. She needs time to heal, gain weight, build strength, and learn that the world isn't always such a scary place.
❤️ When she's healthy and ready, one incredibly lucky family is going to bring home a dog who fought with everything she had just to be here. A dog who, despite everything she's endured, still has SO MUCH love to give. ❤️
Rory has already survived neglect, a life-threatening infection, and emergency surgery. Now she needs us to help her finish this fight. She is a survivor. She is a fighter. And she deserves to know what a beautiful life feels like.
