This thrift store find is a good reminder not to overlook old poker chips.

Vintage Bakelite and Catalin poker chips can be highly collectible, especially colorful swirled sets with their original racks. Catalin is a cast form of phenolic plastic similar to Bakelite, but without fillers, allowing brighter colors and translucent patterns.

These two sets sold for $1,175 and $1,764, while rarer examples can sell for thousands. A quick collector test is to rub the plastic until warm and check for its distinctive old chemical smell.
