Ashley began practicing Iaido in 2001 at the Garden of the Spring Wind Dojo in Wilmington, NC and holds the rank of Nidan (second degree black belt). He also holds the rank of Nidan in Shorin Hi Shuhari Ryu Karate. He is also a practitioner of O-syuji, Japanese calligraphy, and has a deep admiration of Japanese culture and arts. We are a traditional Iaido school, however we are independently owned and operated and not affiliated with any larger Iaido organizations. Ashley began practicing yoga in 2001 as well. Having seen the benefits of yoga and meditation in his life, he has been committed to daily practice for the past five years and completed his 200 hour yoga teacher training with Salty Dog Yoga and Surf in Carolina Beach in February of 2023. Ashley has seen countless benefits from practicing both of these arts and he is honored and excited to be able to offer them to as many people as possible. Please reach out with any questions!

This video covers the Kamae of Toyama Ryu Iaido. There really isn't an exact English equivalent to kamae. People will use stance as a bit of shorthand for kamae, however, that doesn't quite capture the meaning. Kamae could be described as our base or posture, not just what our feet are doing, but our whole being, including our mental attitude. This video includes instruction on each kamae and Kamae no Kata, the form we use to practice and memorize the kamae.

As an aside, as you are practicing your kamae, I would offer you a bit of wisdom from my yoga practice. In the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, we're instructed to find a stable and comfortable asana, or seat. Asana is the Sanskrit word for the different poses we do in yoga. It is how we are sitting in our own bodies. So, as you are practicing your kamae, ask yourself: Am I stable? Am I too tense, too relaxed? Am I centered and balanced, or do I feel off balance? You may find it helpful to take these questions off of the mat and out of the dojo as well. Happy practicing!

The first video I posted on the new channel was San-jigoku (Three hells), named for the complexity of the footwork in the opening, yoko, and kesa sections of the kata. This is a non-traditional kata invented by my sensei. The footwork is fun and challenging to learn, and can be quite physically demanding when you do it full speed. I like to end my daily home practice with three rounds of this one.

The rest of the kata that I will be posting on this channel are traditional. This one is the lone exception. This kata was created by my sensei. One of hi...

Hey, everyone! I have started a page where I will be posting yoga practices, instructional videos on Toyama Ryu Iaido (Japanese swordsmanship), meditation, and more. If you're interested, I encourage you to like and subscribe to my channel and check out the videos. I do not consider myself a skilled videographer, editor, or any of the other technical stuff that makes the behind the scenes work easier, so this is a bit of an experiment for me. I thought it would be fun, and hopefully helpful to others, to try to share some of the practices that I've enjoyed so much over the years, so we'll see how it goes!

In Iaido, we have both individual and paired kata. Our paired kata are called kumitachi. Paired kata aid students in developing mindfulness and attention to detail, maai,or proper awareness and use of space, the importance of proper timing, and how to respond to or counter a variety of attacks. As you will see in Ippon Mae, the first kumitachi, they begin with the uchidachi, or attacker, calling out the shidachi. The outcome is decided in a couple of brief, decisive movements.
