When I built the world of Sugar & Spite, I wanted every corner of it to feel undeniably Black.

The founding families. The bakery. The bookstore off of Rose Boulevard. The churches. (the bougie one included) The politicians. The media. The universities. Even horse country.

Especially horse country. 🌹

No. I’m not moping that I missed BRBF this year and all my frandssss went and had a good time. 😭

It has officially been 6 months since I published my book. 🥹

Since then, I’ve:
• Sold a couple hundred books through Amazon and my website
• Attended my first event as an Author at BookNik in Dallas
• Sold out of all my physical copies at the event
• Received several 5-star reviews
• Charted on Amazon’s Top 100 Best Sellers list for Black & African American Literary Fiction... TWICE. 🥰

There were so many moments where I questioned myself before releasing this book. Seeing people connect with my words the way they have honestly means everything to me.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me, shared my book, reviewed it, encouraged me, or simply believed in me along the way. This is only the beginning. 🖤

Some days, the most productive thing a creative can do is close the laptop, ignore the word count, and rest.

Not because the ideas are gone. Not because the passion disappeared. Because your brain is not a machine, and creativity is not an assembly line.

Authors carry entire worlds in their heads. Characters talking at 2am. Plot holes while folding laundry. Random dialogue in the grocery store line. Creative work follows you everywhere, even when nobody sees it.

So yes, rest counts.

The pause between projects matters. The nap matters. The walk matters. Sitting in silence instead of forcing another chapter matters.

You are still a writer on the days you don’t write 2,000 words.

Sometimes the story needs you rested more than it needs you exhausted.
