We are excited to announce the Tough Trail Seat Extender Storage Box took home a Family & Travel award from !

Are you traveling with Dogs? Place this Orvis storage box in your car’s back seat footwell to store essentials while giving your dog more room to sprawl out during a long drive. It has a padded top for comfort and strong construction to support the weight of a pup sitting on top. It has a removable interior organizer and compresses flat for easy storage.

From Good Housekeeping: Frequent road-trippers reported that this box helped them stay more organized on the go. Our testers called it “lightweight but tough” and “super easy to carry.” They also said it was easy to move the box between multiple vehicles. One user said, “The pockets inside and outside the box were really appreciated and made it easy to find small items.”

This Veterans Day we share our deep gratitude and honor the commitment, bravery, and sacrifices of those who have served our nation in the Armed Forces. We are proud to celebrate and honor those among us at Orvis who have served, and humbled by the opportunity to support the work being done in communities around the country to serve veterans through the power of the outdoors.

For nearly two decades, Orvis has worked with Project Healing Waters, a non-profit that offers fly-fishing as a therapeutic tool to support the continued healing and recovery of our military heroes. Founded in 2005, Project Healing Waters began its work with military service members returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since then, the organization has introduced more than 8,000 veterans to the healing power of nature and fly fishing, with hundreds of programs across the country and thousands of dedicated volunteers. The organization's innovative approach has made it a leader in using outdoor recreation to aid the rehabilitation of disabled veterans.

Many Orvis stores and associates connect with Project Healing Waters through fundraising and events, strengthening local connections with veterans. Kelly Maynard-Bales, Store Manager at Orvis Sevierville (TN), shares:

"We were honored to partner with our local Project Healing Waters chapter during Orvis Giveback Days. Jeremy Kwasney, a military veteran and retail guide, has built a strong relationship with the organization, and when it came time to choose a partner for the event we knew Project Healing Waters was the right fit. We've seen firsthand the incredible impact the organization has made on participants, and we’ve heard from customers who have directly benefited from their programs."

In addition to Kelly Maynard-Bales, our Cleveland, OH, Fly Fishing Lead Diane Wantz has helped facilitate collaborations where participants and volunteers engage in core program activities such as fly tying, rod building, casting, education, and outings.

From all of us at Orvis, thank you for your service.

Podcast: 14 Tips for Spring Creek Fishing, with Brant Oswald

Brant Oswald is a veteran guide, teacher, and fly shop operator with over 40 years in the business. He’s one of the best spring creek anglers I know and guides on them almost every day, so I asked him to come up with some tips on better spring creek techniques. Even if you never fish spring creeks, his tips really apply to any slow or low water situations so these tips will be valuable to any trout angler.

“Across much of the country, bird hunters are settling into a midseason groove. The dust is off, the dogs are fit and hunting well, and the gun is coming up in that old, familiar motion. On these late fall days, a bird hunter can fully inhabit the landscape, and the identity found there. Its a time we’ve waited all year for, and a time worth holding onto, even as the days grow short.” -

After more than 14 years at the helm, the editor of Orvis News is signing off. Check out his farewell message.

On Wednesday, September 15, 2010, we turned on the lights and unlocked the doors to the Orvis News blogsite. I’d actually begun working on the project—along with fellow associates James Hathway and Eric Rickstad—six months earlier, and we’d spent . . .

Starting on September 1, many of you committed to an important challenge: trying to get out on the water at least 20 times during the 30 days of the month. This is a concept that dates back to 2014, and we opened it up to the public the next year–here’s the . . .

Sadly, legendary author John Gierach passed away last week. It's a big loss for both the fly-fishing and writing communities. Here's his final appearance on Tom's podcast from back in 2019.

Tom is on a fishing trip this week. While away, he learned that his friend and legendary fly-fishing author John Gierach had passed away at the age of 78. In his honor, Tom asked me to post his last interview with John from May of last year and to . . .

Iceland is full of wonders—from the fascinating language, to the rugged landscape veined by spectacular rivers, to the incredible number of waterfalls you can see in a single day. While fishing for sea-run brown trout with ’s Kristján Rafnsson and Sindri Hlíðar Jónsson, Phil Monahan was lucky to swing-up a beautiful Atlantic salmon, fresh from the ocean. The run was just beginning during the last week in July, and the rivers were high and muddy at first. But as they fell and cleared, and the weather held out, the fishing picked up considerably. Anglers who want to experience the peak of these runs can click the link below to learn about Orvis Week at Battle Hill Lodge.

In this week's great podcast, Tom talks to a fly-fishing guide/therapist who has some fascinating views on how we all benefit from time on the water. Plus, tons of great tips in the Fly Box segment.

We keep hearing that fly fishing is good for your mental health. It gets you out in the natural world, involves problem solving, and keeps you active and moving throughout the day (unless you sit in a drift boat watching a bobber). But is it always good for . . .

The most exciting way to fly-fish for bass and panfish is to use topwater bugs, but sometimes the fish may not want to commit to eating a surface fly. In this case, try a Popper-Dropper setup. The commotion caused by the popper attracts the fishes' attention, and then they see a tasty nymph hanging there. You'll be surprised by just how effective this technique can be.
