Want to make a wish? Bring your friends and family to the Japanese Garden to celebrate Tanabata, the Japanese “Star Festival.” Put on by the Japan-America Society of Alabama with the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, this festival marks the reunion of two star-crossed lovers according to legend and occurs on the 7th day of the 7th month. The event will include traditional performances and activities. We invite you to make a special wish on tanzaku (colorful paper strips) and hang it on our ceremonial bamboo.

Are you a Birmingham resident? Support one of your city's sister city relationships by taking part in our annual Tanabata wish exchange, in partnership with Birmingham Sister Cities !

From the Mayor of Maebashi, Akira Ogawa:

"With global conflict increasing in recent years, we believe international exchange, especially between sister cities, is more important than ever.

Therefore, as a part of the exchange between our two cities, and as a wish for peace throughout the world, we propose that citizens of both cities write their wishes and put them on display..."

Submit your wishes for "an end to global conflict, for the continued promotion of exchange and peace," or other related hopes and desires through this Google Form: https://forms.gle/gB6XEDNTHpRk5F5N9.

Your wish will be sent to the Maebashi Culture and International Affairs office, where it will be written on colorful paper and displayed during Maebashi's Tanabata festival celebration, July 10-12!

The deadline to submit wishes is June 16th - so don't wait, and take part in this important cultural exchange this Tanabata season.
