For many Native people, long hair is more than a style. It carries memory, identity, prayer, and a connection to those who came before us. 🪶
Across many Native American cultures, hair has long been treated with care and respect. For some, growing it long is a way of honoring family, ancestors, tradition, and the natural world.
And a braid can hold meaning far beyond what we see.
It may represent balance, strength, unity, and the connection between mind, body, and spirit. Every strand can become part of a story — a story of family, community, and cultural identity passed from one generation to the next.
In some Native traditions, hair may be cut during times of mourning or major life changes. Because of this deep meaning, the forced cutting of Native children’s hair during the boarding school era left wounds that reached far beyond appearance. It was part of a painful time when many Indigenous traditions were discouraged or taken away.
But those traditions did not disappear.
Today, long hair continues to be worn with pride by many Native people. It can be a quiet reminder of where we come from, who walked before us, and what continues to live through the next generation.
Long hair can carry history.
Long hair can carry strength.
Long hair can carry home. ❤️
For many Native communities, it is not simply hair.
It is heritage that continues to grow.
