Even more important than sharp blades is good pivot hardware. As we’ve discussed in previous videos, scissors don’t just cut like a knife. They make use of shear force - each scissor half pulls the material in a different direction and it shears apart. Even if your blades are sharp, a loose fastener prevents a tight pass of the blades, leading to an unsatisfying slice.

The D-shaped s*x bolt is our favorite way to solve the problem of unthreading without removing the threads. It ensures a tight and clean shear through years and years of use. And if your scissors ever need servicing, it allows them to be taken apart. Please see the pinned-comment on this video for notes on disassembly.

If you’re in the market for any pivoting object, we recommend taking a close look at the fastener to see if they are designing for unintentional unthreading.

Designed nearly a decade ago by designer and Fort Standard founder Gregory Buntain, the Standing Bowl has since become an icon in its own right. Now, we’ve partnered with Fort Standard to bring a limited run of these iconic vessels to a new home: yours.

When Gregory approached us about adopting the Standing Bowl we jumped at the opportunity. It’s an object that we’ve loved since its inception, and we’re proud to be trusted as stewards of this iconic piece as we introduce it to a new audience.

Each cast-aluminum Standing bowl is elevated by a set of planar legs, allowing for surprising depth and an architectural aspect. Short Round and Long Standing Bowls are available in Matte Black and a Craighill-exclusive Polished Aluminum finish, with Long bowls also available in powder coated Matte Black and Craighill-exclusive Glossy Yellow finishes.

Zip ties, socket wrenches, and surprisingly vintage lighters all use ratchet mechanisms to enable motion in one direction only. We loved figuring out how this little part worked so we could bring it into our design. We hope you find it as satisfying as we do.

Vesta cases, sovereign cases, and s***f boxes (all shown above) have fallen out of use with the decline of matches, coins, and s***f. We were attracted to the look and tactility of these Victorian references, so we used them as inspiration to design our own pocketable case for cards (or anything else you can fit inside). The Summit Card Case brings some mechanical satisfaction and material joy to our modern phone-centric daily carry.
