With the amount of life being recorded today, how can we possibly capture the full wonder of a person’s life?
For a long time, the problem was not having enough records.
Now, in many cases, the problem is the opposite.
My son recently wrote my mom a letter telling her how grateful he is for her. He wrote about her constant encouragement to pursue his dreams and how much that has meant to him. He told her she will probably never fully understand all the good she has done in his life.
He wrote about what it was like to grow up in the stream of compassion, encouragement, tenderness, discernment, testimony, faith, and discipleship that flows so naturally from her. He remembered her taking time for him, taking him on walks, teaching him about nature, showing him how to skip rocks on the lake by her house, and always making him food when we visited.
When I read it, it brought tears to my eyes.
It captured something true about who she is. The kind of thing any of us would hope might be remembered. Not just facts about a life, but the meaning of a life. The effect one person has on the people they love.
And that letter exists somewhere in a thread of messages.
In a few months, that thread will be longer and filled with ordinary things: where is the remote, can you get some milk, what is for dinner. Without some way of finding and preserving that letter, it will almost certainly disappear into the flood of everyday life. And with it goes a glimpse of who she is, written in her grandson’s own words.
