Wedding solutions part 4 (final): bodice
The first alterations provider added several "boning" strips to smooth out the bodice for the bride. At that time the bodice was also tightened (a bit too much) and the shoulders worked on. While this solved issues with how the fabric laid across the body, it created itchy and unpleasant irritation on the skin and difficulty closing the buttons on the back. The bride asked me if I could do anything to soften it.
Noticing that the fabric the previous seamstress had used to cover up her work was cotton based and had no flexibility, I replaced the entire thing with soft, flesh colored spandex that would move with her while she partied at the reception and hopefully would provide a little stretch to more easily button the gown. While I was doing it, I also secured the buttons with a better technique and replaced the hooks that were mis-shaped.
Finally, the gown was wearable again and the bride was happy.
When you pay good money, expect good quality workmanship. This bridal store failed their client in more ways than one. I was more than happy to help her out but really wish that she hadn't needed me in the first place. Nothing that I saw done by the previous seamstress was done properly and that's a shame. A wedding dress might just be the most important piece of clothing that a woman will ever buy. It should be treated as such and the bride treated with due respect as well.
