𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝑫𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒔 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒚 𝑺𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝑳𝑮𝑩𝑻𝑸 𝑪𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆?

𝗧𝗹,𝗱𝗿: Cannabis and qu**rs have always been allies in the quest for respect and legal recognition, and that’s why the two communities are inextricably linked. (But don’t miss out our little reveal at the end of this post 😉)

There’s always been a deep connection between LGBTQ community and ma*****na legalization movement. If not for the LGBTQ community, legalization of cannabis wouldn’t be as successful as today. The HIV/AIDS epidemic was a major motivator for drug's medicinal use to be legalized. It was Dennis Peron and Steve L. 's legal battle for medicinal cannabis rights that marked a watershed moment in the legalization movement, helping raise people’s awareness of the drug’s benefits for terminally ill patients. This fight was a major factor of California going legal for the most part.

Dennis Peron is now considered to be the godfather of the legal w**d movement. Peron was an openly gay man and in fact he had been fighting for the legalization of w**d long before the AIDS epidemic, but when the disease began to take a heavy toll on the gay community, Peron opened a Cannabis Buyers’ Club in 1994, where people with AIDS and other illnesses could purchase cannabis to help mitigate pain, nausea, headaches, wasting syndrome, anxiety, depression, and other symptoms associated with HIV/AIDS. Steve L. was the first person with AIDS to receive medical ma*****na.

Two decades later, q***r people use cannabis at a far higher rate than straight people – not because of HIV anymore, but because of the plethora of mental and physical illness LGBTQ people face at a higher rate. When compared to heterosexual adults, sexual minority people are more than twice as likely to use ma*****na, according to data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health from 2015. In comparison to 12.9% of heterosexual people, nearly a third of sexual minority people (30.7%) reported consuming ma*****na in the previous year.
