Trees Aren’t the Carbon Sinks We Thought 🌳📉

We’ve been counting on forests to save us from climate change. But new research shows they might not be storing as much carbon as we hoped.

Scientists found that oak trees keep absorbing CO2 long after they stop growing. In fact, up to 36% of their annual carbon intake happens after growth has ceased.

Why does this matter? Because absorbed carbon doesn’t always become wood. Much of it is used for leaves, roots, or simply kept alive through winter, and eventually released back into the atmosphere.

This means our climate models may have overestimated how much carbon forests can lock away in a warming world. It’s a humbling reminder: nature is complex, and we can’t just assume “more trees = more storage.”

We still need to protect forests, but we also need to drastically cut emissions. The trees are helping, but they aren’t a magic fix.
