I am so sorry to tell you we have some devastating news about two of our zonkeys. We had been working for the last couple of weeks to find a place where Zilli felt safe and happy. As you know she had been weaving and pawing a lot at gates, even after we turned her and Pippi out with ZZ and Zsa Zsa. They asked to come back in and we brought them back to their pen. We then wanted to see if they got on better with Zee and Zebedee. They shared a fence line for several days until it was determined that they wanted to be together and we let them out in the aisle and they grazed together. When we turned them into a large pen Zee ran towards Pippi and scared her and she tragically ran into a pole and died instantly. Zee then ran towards Zilli and she instinctively kicked out injuring Zee and tragically the vet had to put him to sleep. The entire thing happened in less than a minute and was devastating to Janelle and staff present. In all of our ten year history we have introduced hundreds of equines and never suffered a fatality or even serious injury. This was a tragic horrible accident that we are all so shocked by. It was nobody’s fault, least of all the animals involved and I don’t believe any were trying to hurt each other. I have long said that zonkeys can be unpredictable, volatile, reactive and in some cases dangerous. There was nothing we could have done to prevent this very sad event. We have spoken to Zilli and Pippi’s loving family and they were incredibly sad as we are but very understanding. One of the most remarkable outcomes is that we put the larger zonkey Zilli in with Rapunzel s herd of mares and she has immediately bonded with them and stopped weaving and showing the stress behaviors she had been exhibiting. Zebedee is in with Marcie Marshmallow and Forest and is playing happily and seems to be very happy there. I will get video up of them in the next couple of days. We are all shocked and saddened and I can’t answer comments today as we just need to grieve and have a quiet time with the horses and the herds 💔

I stepped out into the yard early in the morning, almost automatically, with my phone and a cup of coffee in my hands.
The ground was still wet from the night rain, and the air smelled strongly of damp earth. I walked toward the trash bins when I suddenly noticed a strange elongated stain, pinkish-brown, on the path.
At first, I didn’t even stop. I thought someone had thrown away food. In fact, that was my first thought — as if someone had dumped a pile of cooked spaghetti onto the asphalt.
The mass looked irregular, sticky, and wet, as if it had just come out of a pot. I moved closer to go around it — and at that moment, a chill ran down my spine.
The mass began to move.
And then, with hσrror, I realized it wasn’t spaghetti at all, but… 😨😲
