NEW APPAREL! NEW HIKE!

The new Mabana Logo Tees come in black/navy, and the Mabana Logo Sweatpants come in black/white. Both are available on the website linked in the bio! The new apparel was manufactured by Fair Trade Certified . You can find each new product featured in these photos of some friends and me climbing Piestewa Peak!

Piestewa Peak is a 2.1-mile out-and-back trail located near Phoenix’s Biltmore Area and is rated as a double black diamond trail because of the quick 1,148-ft elevation gain. The biggest challenge we faced, however, was fighting off the bugs that were also doing the hike that morning! We enjoyed seeing some wildlife as we hiked, including a few chuckwallas and squirrels, featured as you scroll. The view was incredible at the top of the rock face and along the entire hike.

Over this winter, I got the chance to meet Graham Anderson and his daughter Robin, descendants of the founder of Mabana Beach, Nels ‘Peg Leg’ Anderson. They shared several stories about their families’ heritage in the area and a few vintage photos of the beach.

The story of Mabana started when Anderson began logging operations in the 1890’s and eventually built a 900-foot wharf that became known as Mabana Dock. The beach’s name was coined through a combination of the letters of Nels’ wife Johanna and their daughter Mabel.

Graham emphasized the roles of his hardy grandmothers’ Mabel and Pearl and reminisced on his father sheepishly saying he wasn’t able to beat his mother Mabel in arm wrestling until he was 16. Pearl Anderson Wanamaker, another daughter of Nils, was a teacher at Mabana Schoolhouse and later became a state legislator and the first woman State Superintendent of Public Instruction, a position she served for sixteen years. Nils also held roles as an Island County state representative, county engineer, and Commissioner.

After my conversation with Graham and Robin, my mom and I went out to visit Mabana Beach. On our way down the hill, we passed a couple that was wearing one of the Mabana beanies and they said they had the hat and sweatshirt, too. It was so cool to see the brand being worn at Mabana!

One of two state parks on Camano Island, Cama Beach has a lot to offer. The area was operated privately as a fishing resort before becoming a state park in 1994. Besides the beach and several trails, the park boasts dozens of cabins, a café, a boathouse that teaches boat-building classes, and plenty of fishing and crabbing opportunities.

As a kid, I used to ride bikes and had a couple cross country practices throughout the trails here. Over this Christmas break, Gavin, Blake, Josh and I took an afternoon to visit the beach and take some pictures. ‘A’ Mountain is an easy hike featuring a view of downtown Tempe, Arizona State University, and the greater Phoenix area. The current 60ft letter ‘A’, representing ASU, has been on the mountain’s face since 1955, but was prefaced by an ‘N’ for Tempe Normal School in 1918, and a ‘T’ in for Tempe State Teachers College in 1925. Logan, Sara, and I, all current students at Arizona State, recently got the chance to hike the mountain during the rare cool weather here in AZ. Featured Evergreen Dad Hats and Mabana Flags are available on our website!

Saguaro Lake features several ways to enjoy the sun down here in Arizona. From cliff jumping to boating, paddle boarding to fishing, hiking to barbecuing, this has been one of our favorite spots to go on the weekend.

The lake's popular cliff jumping spot is often left with trash scattered all over it. Last year, Ty, Jessie, and I decided to take action and help clean up the area. We were able to leave with several trash bags filled up after spending a few hours at the lake.

More information about the lake and its activities can be found at the Tonto National Forest link attached.

Over last winter, Brandt, Maleah, and Max explored the Barnum Point Preserve trails on Camano Island, WA in our Evergreen Dad Hats. Shop these hats online and take them with you throughout this winter!

Established in 2019, Barnum Point is down the street from my house and I love going there with friends to walk the trails or hang out on the beach. There are seven trails and a mile-long beach that boasts views of Port Susan and the Cascade Mountains, as well as serving as a natural habitat for wildlife. A link to the Washington Trails Association's description of the park is included below.
