Which do you prefer: the cool tones of silver, white gold & platinum, the warmth of yellow gold, or a mix of metals?
Yellow gold was the dominant choice through the Victorian era, it was accessible, workable, and very much in fashion. Then, new technology in the early 20th century made it possible to work with platinum and white gold on a much larger scale, creating the shift toward cool-toned jewelry we see in the Art Deco period.
So, as a very general rule of thumb:
Pre-1900 → predominantly yellow gold
1920s–30s → predominantly white gold & platinum
