I grew up on a dairy farm in rural Pennsylvania and love simple, country life. I have always been creative and as a child I learned to crochet from my grandmother for whom it was a lifelong passion. After our family moved back to central Pa and onto a historic little farm, Walnut Farm Designs was born. The Lord has blessed me with more than I could have imagined by giving me a little business out

of what I enjoy. We raise Blue Faced Leicester sheep and I look forward to being able to sell their excellent wool. These animals provide us with wonderful fiber and lots of entertainment. I love working with the colors of fibers and spinning yarn. There is always something new to try and enjoy creating here at Walnut Farm Designs! It has been so great to have so many PAYarnQuesters coming to the store since May! It was especially exciting to have a van full today!! Over the weekend USPS put some pricing changes into effect. Then yesterday, they announced further changes. There have been 2 USPS price increases this year already, and when those changes were announced, they had hinted at further comprehensive price changes later in the year. I just purchased a label for a New Mexico address. It was only a 2.9oz, 9"x7" padded mailer, and it cost $8.07 to ship it. That is the lowest, commercial rate available. I've still not gotten used to and comfortable with the increased shipping rates this year, and now there are further changes. I was wondering how many zipcodes will be considered 'rural'. So much of the U.S. is rural. I've not wanted to use Etsy's shipping calculator because it would calculate ridiculously high for multiple item orders, so I have been using shipping profiles to balance out shipping costs, since the cost has depended on how far the package is traveling (since changes the other year). I am going to track my shipping costs versus what I charge for a little while and see if I think I can still balance out the costs with shipping profiles. If I think I have to use Etsy's shipping calculator, I will have to rely more heavily on refunding whenever the price charged is ridiculously higher than what it actually costs. I have refunded extra shipping costs for years.
*****'Effective today, July 15th, USPS has unified ounce-based Ground Advantage pricing for under 1 pound packages shipped to rural ZIP Codes. This is the same change they recently made for under 1 pound shipments to non-contiguous destinations.
👇 What's changing
All packages under 1 pound shipped to rural ZIP Codes will be charged the 15.99 oz rate. Packages shipped from those rural ZIP Codes remain unaffected (unless shipping to another rural destination).
For example: When shipping to a rural destination, shipping a 2 oz package now costs the same as a 15.99 oz package.
📦 What's NOT changing
• Most destinations: The current ounce-based rates remain available for shipments to cities and more densely populated areas.
• Non-contiguous destinations (Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, military addresses): Based off the July 12th rate change, all packages under 1 lb will still be charged the 15.99 oz rate when shipping both to or from those locations.'

Employing the daughter to harvest the Dyer’s Chamomile seed heads. I do love to see them working in the garden! 😁🌱 I’ve harvested the Weld seeds, so it is time to cut down and dry the Weld stalks. I have more Weld than I’ve had in the past and if you don’t cut the stalks while they are fresh, the stems get so so hard. But even while fresh it is hard on the hands chopping so many stems up into little pieces. Fresh weld gives such a clear yellow, and sometimes very fresh weld yellow can almost have a chartreuse tone to the yellow.

I have 2lbs of this really beautiful 'Bramble Purple' carded Kent Romney/ Jacob wool in stock. It is such a pretty berry purple heather. It has a short staple length that is shown in the pictures and is like carded wool usually is with short fibers and more vm in the wool. I love the color. Also, some fall/halloween needlestoppers I've finally had time to photograph and list! I thought I'd better because fall will be here sooner than we know it! I have a fall stitch marker hanging on the fall inspired handspun tee I'm knitting! Might need to use some fall needle stoppers too!

We're working on and testing the possibility of my own online store in addition to my Etsy store!! It was a rainy and humid day yesterday and my workaholic husband had finally had enough of working outside in the humidity, and since there is no slower, better time of year to do it......we decided to start exploring it now! I had hoped to be able to reduce prices if I had my own online store, but we'll have to figure that out so it isn't confusing between Etsy, my physical store and the online store. The software is trying to import and deal with my over 1,000 product listings right now and it is going slowly! Keeping track of inventory between selling sites is very important, along with using Tax Jar to make sure each state taxes are taken care of correctly.

Pictures of the silk hankies I grew were in my memories today. For at least 3 years I raised wayyy too many silk worms! It takes a LOT of mulberry leaves, and while the process only takes several weeks, I stopped doing it because it was stressful and took time to pick so many leaves for so many hungry caterpillars! They chow down on the leaves, and the one summer my husband lifted me up in the tractor scoop so I could get at leaves higher up! The pans needed changed every so often. Pretty simple and fun, but raising so many every year took time and stress that I didn't need, so I didn't get into selling silk worm eggs. 😃 I actually just found a small container of the silk worm eggs I had stored in the fridge over the winter for hatching the next year. It is so wonderful the many forms of perfectly de-gummed silk that we have available so readily. The cocoons were colorful, and I dried a bunch out in the oven, but that takes a while to get them really dehydrated well and the cocoons that I stored lost their color over the next 2-3 years.

I have 9 colors of this Marilyn yarn in stock. You get 10% off when you come to the store to buy it! I'm starting to think about having an online store off of Etsy as well, so I can lower prices a little. However, if I sell on Etsy and my own site, I will need to pay a service to sync my inventory. We'll see...... I'd like to keep prices down and make enough to make it worth while! *Also, I don't love music on reels for the most part.....and couldn't figure out how to get rid of the sound of the air conditioner which I should have turned off!!

This is the knitted top that I saw that made me have to buy all this Marilyn yarn!!!! Die Merceri, the German pattern designer and yarn seller is said to be working on translating this pattern to English. On their site they had been only going to sell the pattern with the yarn, but they didn't seem to ship to the US, nor was the pattern in English and for sale separately. I have to make a top like this, so I have purchased the yarn in 9 colors and have it for sale in my Etsy shop, and hopefully the pattern will be available in English soon and for sale just as the pattern. If not, I'll be able to figure out something close, but I'd like to buy the pattern. New summer yarn!!!👀🧶😍 I need to take pictures and get this listed online. It is in the store though, if you’re nearby! I will find the picture of the pattern that made me have to order this yarn for myself, if not to share! 😁 This is a nice thin cotton with a tiny sequin. If you look up this Juniper Moon Marilyn yarn on Ravelry, there is a beautiful tank top in the delicate pink, Champagne Toast color. The navy blue is classic. A top in this navy blue will be a perfect classic on anyone, but so would a white, cream or black top. On Ravelry there were some very thin, drapey, delicate summer wraps that people had knit or crocheted with this yarn. Absolutely perfect for that. I like that this yarn is thin and light with a subtle sparkle to make it just a little special.

All the natural colors of Icelandic wool in stock! I was happy to be working inside yesterday listing more natural colors of Icelandic, Shetland and Jacob wools, along with more dyed colors of Blue Faced Leicester wool and restocking BFL blends and other wools! The blessed air conditioning is running in the store and keeping it a wonderful, woolly respite from the heat outside!
