Walnut Farm Designs

Walnut Farm Designs Store open on Fridays, 9am - 8pm, unless posted here otherwise. We are also open by appt. Welcome! I am enjoying living my dream.....a simple country life.

I grew up on a dairy farm in rural Pennsylvania and love simple, country life. I have always been creative and as a child I learned to crochet from my grandmother for whom it was a lifelong passion. After our family moved back to central Pa and onto a historic little farm, Walnut Farm Designs was born. The Lord has blessed me with more than I could have imagined by giving me a little business out

of what I enjoy. We raise Blue Faced Leicester sheep and I look forward to being able to sell their excellent wool. These animals provide us with wonderful fiber and lots of entertainment. I love working with the colors of fibers and spinning yarn. There is always something new to try and enjoy creating here at Walnut Farm Designs! Our products are available online at our Etsy store, Walnut Farm Designs at www.etsy.com/shop/walnutfarmdesigns

Finished by second Berry Jam top! Pattern by Hook Mountain Handmade. This top is a plant fiber blend of dyed flax, white cotton, and dyed Ramie that I blended on hand cards and then spun a single ply that I plied with pink sewing thread. Where I messed up, is that I didn’t realize until the bottom that somehow I forgot to change from the Size 0 needles that I meant to only use on the ribbing! So the whole top is not quite as loose as I had planned and I did a lot of stretching of it when I soaked and dried it, but it fits ok. Wheww! I would love this as a light spring sweater in wool in these colors! My daughter, who loves fruit, strawberry, cherry anything indicated that it would have been fine if the top was too small for me and fit her. My strawberries are just ripening this year. A little smaller than normal but they seem extra delicious!

Not fiber arts, but lots of fiber arts lovers love tea too! A customer was in on Friday and mentioned this Harney and Sons Hot Cinnamon tea because I said I love cinnamon. She mentioned it was sweet on its own, so I bought this Decaf version on Amazon and it just came and my goodness, but it is sweet on its own and very potent cinnamon! I don't drink tea as much because I like my tea sweet and use a LOT of honey in my tea. My husband's flavored creamed honeys (Walnut Farm Bees) are perfect for tea, especially the vanilla, but I use too much and I think I shouldn't be drinking the extra sugar! Just thought I'd share this sweet, hot cinnamon tea with you all! No wonder it's such a popular tea! I never heard of this brand either!

Dyer’s Greenweed, Genista Tinctoria, Dyer’s Broom just beginning to bloom. I should have made more of an effort to get this growing years ago. Maybe I’ll get some seeds to sell from it this year finally, and I’ll finally get to dye some yarn with it!

Tomorrow is the last day of school for two of my children, so I need to go to both of their awards ceremonies in the morning. My husband and daughter will be here to help you if you stop by in the morning. They are nice and helpful.......they just don't know as much about wool and yarn! 😄

I've been out of Rambouillet, and Formerly Organic Polwarth for a while. But luckily for us, wool is a renewable resource and the sheepies grow more for us yearly and are happy to be sheared for the summer! Prices have increased and right now energy costs associated with shipping have increased costs. One reason I wanted to spin and knit my own sweaters and tops was because I wanted clothes that lasted! So, at least we can get many years of wear out of handmade woolens instead of a single season of wear for a cheap sweater! Find these undyed wools in the Undyed Wool section of my Etsy shop. walnutfarmdesigns.etsy.com

I have never felt so confused by the weather as this spring. I don’t know if we are behind or ahead or what! I usually have an analysis but this year some plants that can tolerate the frosts seem ahead while others are so behind because they’ve been frosted back at least twice. The Weld is tall and will soon begin to bloom. All of these dye plants have been unphased. The elecampagne was frosted back twice but is up again and going strong. Woad is never phased. It will just bow its heads a little in the frost and continue unphased. Plains Coreopsis is unphased as well. My self seeded Japanese Indigo did feel the cold and it doesn’t usually. I got almost all the plants I bought at Md. Sheep and Wool Festival planted before the rain today. I was too crazy the last several years to enjoy my gardening like I want to, so I’m looking to tackle things that were left go and find the balance and renew my joy in whatever the days bring.

My 2nd handspun Berry Jam by Hook Mountain Handmade. The strawberry yoke is so cute! I blended flax, cotton, and ramie and made rolags on my handcards for each color yarn. The strawberry blossoms are waning and berries are setting and I might need to blend, spin, ply and set a little more of the main color yarn to finish this top. I better get knitting so I can find out! I want to be picking and eating strawberry shortcake in my Berry Jam tee!

Must be a creative and/or middle aged women when you get this fortune and think, that is one of the best fortunes I’ve ever gotten! I can’t wait for Wednesday! 😄🤞🏻I hope it involves plants or wool!

Such a great use for gradient or self striping yarns! There is a fi*****ng and DK weight pattern for this. I bought the gradient yarn to make this top from White Birch Fiber Arts. I thought I would use my own lovely handspun BFL wool in this natural neutral tan for the bottom of the top. This is a must knit this summer!
