Talk to Me Baby!

1-year-olds should begin using single words (mama, dada, up, no). When they are using about 50 words consistently, you may notice them starting to put two words together (up mama). If your little one is already using single words, EXPAND those words into 2 words by repeating the word they use and adding a word to it. For instance, baby says “milk”, you say “want milk, yes, you want milk, baby wants milk” or “more milk, yes let’s get you more milk, here you go, more milk”. You have modeled 2-words 3x and helped make the association with the words and actions, while acting on baby’s request! Excellent language stim!!

In a whiny, fussy stage? Your baby that is!

If you know your baby is not in any physical discomfort, try changing this dynamic by praising what you want instead of only attending to fussing and whining!

When your baby is playing on her own and you are so relieved to have a few quiet minutes to yourself I would suggest that you don't give in to your desire to not “rock the boat” and just stay quiet. Take a few seconds to gently pat or kiss your baby or just send a smile her way and tell her that you like the way she is playing, then go on about your quiet few minutes. In that one little kiss or pat or smile (positive reinforcement) you have let your baby know you like what she is doing and increased the likelihood that she will do more of it. On the other hand if you ignore the independent play and give more attention to your baby when she is fussing because she's bored or wants Mommy's attention, the only reinforcement from you is for the whiny, fussy behavior. Try it for a few days and let me know if you see a difference!

Friendliness is learned through experience as well as by example. Take your toddler places where there are other children, 2-3 times a week. Even though your little one is not ready to play “with” another child, with each toy exchange and new friend made he/she is learning to be comfortable around others and building self-confidence through those interactions.
You are your toddlers “first” playmate. Teach them about “taking turns” when you play with them! Take turns dropping blocks in to a container, stacking rings, rolling a ball back and forth, stirring with a spoon. Make sure you use the words “my turn”/”your turn” so they become familiar with this play routine and will more readily “take turns” with others.

Is your baby waking or waking more at night lately?

Don't panic, it may just be weather related! With the approach of Autumn comes cooler nights and if you haven't yet, now,may be the time to switch over to warmer jammies and/or making the room your little one sleeps in more comfortable at night. Babies that feel the temperature drop may wake up in the night but they don't know why and can't tell you that they are cold! Remember they don't have a lot of experience with seasonal changes, they've only been around a short time.

Of course there are a number of non-weather related reasons your baby may be waking, including teething, illness, dreams, overtired, hungry, or they just haven't learned how to sleep through the night yet!

Babies as young as four months are capable of sleeping through the night provided their growth and development are on track and you have established a predictable daytime feeding routine in which they get all their calories during the day! You also need to let your baby learn how to go to sleep on their own. If you are rocking, holding, singing, or putting your baby to sleep, they are not only missing out on learning how to fall asleep on their own but you are actually teaching them that they need to be rocked, held, or sung to in order to fall asleep!
